I have a great interest in Audubon and this is my second book about him and his work I have read this year, I really enjoyed the small bio's all about John and his family and the people that worked for/with him. I don't know that much about him factually so for that reason I can't give 5 stars, other then my lack of knowledge I throughly enjoyed this very informative and visually stimulating book.

"When I... Call back to my mind the grandeur and beauty of those almost uninhabited Shores...The dense and lofty summits of forests... Unmolested by the axe of the settler...when I remember that... Extraordinary changes have taken place in the short period of 20 years... For the better or for the worse... I feel with regret that there are on record no satisfactory accounts of the state... Of the country, from the time when our people first settled it."

A useful, concise guide to Audubon's work. It sketches his development as an artist, discusses the difference between the different editions and folios, and explains how Audubon's work was instrumental in developing the genre of natural history art.
