A Treasured Asset for All About Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s the Uncertain Journey: Navigating the Challenges. The Indispensable Guide for Caregivers and Families, by Guy Slowik, Renee Despres, Candace Greenwood, and Bernard Isaacs, is a remarkable and valuable guide that equips everyone with skills and knowledge who interacts with someone who has Alzheimer's or is a caregiver of an Alzheimer's family member and patients. Slowick begins with an explanation to the reader of the words used in the title of his book. I especially relate to these words, “Uncertain Journey.” Slowik states, “Those with Alzheimer’s may wander in many directions from day to day, caught in the ebb and flow of cognitive and emotional tides. ‘Yet, the progression of the disease moves steadily in one direction, forward.” Guy provides the reader with an empathetic, detailed, reassuring, and comprehensible understanding of this terrible disease with twenty-two chapters packed to assist and equip. The chapters that I personally connected with, due to my mother, are; Chapter Mastering the Language of Caring, Their Voice, Their Choice, and Tools and Gadgets.
In Chapter 6 Slowik introduces Naomi Feil’s research and approach called, Validation Therapy. I found this to be extremely meaningful. The caregiver is to accept the views of a person who has Alzheimer’s and not to tell them they are wrong. This provides and demonstrates empathy and understanding toward them. Guy is very thorough in giving the reader; research information, caregiver alerts, tips, better approaches, language, scenarios, and strategies to assist everyone. In Slowik’s chapter Tools and Gadgets, the reader is presented with many items that assist both the caregiver and the patient. Guy states, “Those with Alzheimer’s have difficulty distinguishing between light-colored foods and typically light-colored plates.” A study that Slowik mentions is that “24% of Alzheimer’s ate and drank 84% more when they ate and drank out of colored tableware that was high in contrast to the food (red and yellow was shown to increase appetite while blue was more calming).” I found this chapter to be extremely helpful in providing a better quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s.
I highly recommend this book to everyone not just caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients. This guide is easy to read and flows naturally with the topics presented. It is a true treasure to read, keep, and share with others to equip them and assist the vast number of people in this growing crisis in our country. I would like to thank Guy Slowik for putting his heart and soul into this book so that I and others may learn to be more informed, understanding, and be empathetic about this atrocious disease!

A practical, insightful and detailed book for anyone providing care for older people.

A great book that covers the day to day challenges and long term issues facing those who care for older people with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
It provides everything a carer would need to consider in order to enable better outcomes and quality of life for the people they care for. The book provides knowledge of diseases and what happens to the brain. It stresses the need for early intervention by assessment and diagnosis, as well as good care and end of life planning.

It describes how the work can be challenging, and the need to recognise the cognitive decline. A person can start to forget names, misplace keys, have problems managing finances or with decision-making. This could lead to unpredictability, fluctuations, moments of clarity and confusion with mood changes. It includes advice on how to manage aggressive behaviours using re-direction and de-escalation. It highlights good practice through understanding the range of skills and techniques required and a consideration of the needs of the person cared for.

Subjects covered include:       Nutrition – healthy eating, food preparation and physical exercise.                                        Medication administration, working with GP's and Pharmacists and Natural remedies.              Effective communication strategies - use of language with dignity and respect.
Family strategies for managing responsibilities and open dialogue.
Activities and hobbies: use of art, music, going out, games, sensory toys and reminiscence.          Assistive technology- tools and gadgets, tracking devices, alarms, monitors and door locks.
Transitioning from home to residential care.

I particularly liked the way it encourages carers to develop a self care routine by taking breaks and to seek professional support and understanding if needed, also to develop support networks.

As someone who has worked with older people with dementia and Alzheimer’s for a number of years. I welcome this book as a valuable resource.

Must have for any caregiver of a loved one suffering from any type of dementia

As the primary caregiver for my mother-in-law who recently started having worsening health, this book was published at an opportune time for me.

Although her issues are due to Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, part of this is dementia like symptoms. Her shunt malfunctioned, and she worsened to the status of a severe dementia patient.

This book is so well written and easy to understand. It is so thorough.

I have had many issues with frustration and feelings of being overwhelmed.

The quote "Recognizing and responding with respect to the hidden person is the essence of good caregiving" really resonated with me. Sometimes, it can be hard to see past the illness.

The numerous resources included are also so very helpful. This is a definite must have for any caregiver dealing with a patient with any type of dementia.

Enlightening resource

I wish I had this resource as we navigated Dementia with my mom. We would have been much more prepared and had a better understanding of what her real needs were. I will be passing this on to friends who are in a similar situation.
