When she is 10 years old, Fanny Price is sent from her poor and large family to Mansfield Park, where she is to be raised by her wealthy aunt and uncle, Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram. Though she grows up in the same home as her four older cousins, she is often treated as a poor and ignorant relation, similar to a servant, and is not afforded the same advances into society as her more privileged relatives.

But there is one among her relations who treats her as an equal. Edmund is the second son and the kind-hearted soul of the family. It is not long before Fanny’s childhood appreciation of Edmund’s kindness is transformed into a romantic love more suited to the young woman she’s become. But the fashionably wealthy and attractive brother and sister, Henry and Mary Crawford, arrive at Mansfield and create turmoil for the entire Bertram family—Mary falls for Edward, and Henry falls for all of the female cousins, though he tries to convince Fanny (and himself) that his heart belongs only to her. Will any hearts be spared?

Though often described as the least romantic of Austen’s six novels, Mansfield Park comes to life when Fanny’s true romantic and passionate nature is revealed. Indeed before Edmund’s eyes Fanny’s passion and beauty surpasses that of her new and sophisticated friend, Miss Crawford. And it appears that the overly moralistic Edmund has some untapped passion of his own. Can the pursuit of pleasure be enough to bring this romance to a new level?

Että ihmisen pitääkin olla utelias. Ideana tämä oli ihan lupaava, mutta toteutus jäi uupumaan ja pahasti. Miksi pitää mennä pilaamaan hyvä kirja kohtauksilla, mitkä eivät tuo tarinaan mitään lisää? Loppuun luettu vain ja ainoastaan alkuperäisen tarinan takia (mikä itseasiassa on yksi suosikeistani Austenilta). Onneksi lisäyksiä ei ollut juurikaan ja nekin pystyi silmäilemään pikaisesti läpi. Tähditetään see Austenin kirja, tätä/näitä ei pysty.

Can you spoil a book you already know the ending of?

If you have ever wondered about Mr. and Mrs. Price's sex life, this could be the book for you. Or how about what Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram are like in bed? No? Me neither. Ick.

Then it ends in a weird place and you have to go to Volume 2 for the conclusion.

I would have DNF'd, but I have this weird curiousity about how in the world the author would spice up Mansfield Park and Fanny. Heads up, she didn't really, unless you want the older set to have at it.

I don't know how I am going to get these images out of my head, but this should have been a hard pass for me.

I am giving this book one star because the writing was mostly reflective of the period.

I did not finish it because I had no intention of wasting my time on the second volume. In fact, I would not allow myself to be, once again, bored to the point of screaming!

Donc j'ai choisi de fêter les 200 ans de Mansfield Park à ma façon...
Alors si vous ne connaissez pas le principe de "The Wild and Wanton" il s'agit d’insérer de l'érotisme dans les classiques. En l'occurrence ça commence très fort, puisque dès la première page, on remarque une légère différence avec ce qu'on connait de Jane Austen, c'est assez déstabilisant mais je vous rassure, ensuite .... plus rien ! Alors que la lectrice ( un peu perverse ?) que je suis, s'attendait à quelques scènes croustillantes, notamment à l'occasion de la visite chez le fiancé de Maria : bah rien... Idem pour le passage des répétitions de la pièce ( sérieux entre Mary & Edmund et Henry & Maria, avouez qu'il y aurait eu de quoi faire). Non ce qu'on découvre c'est le texte original de Jane Austen ( sans doute un peu allégé, mais je n'ai pas remarqué de différences, cependant je ne l'ai lu qu'en français celui de Jane et là c'est en anglais) ! Bon certes, il est intéressant de savoir que je suis capable de lire du Jane Austen en VO mais.... ce n'était pas ce que j'attendais de ce livre, mais bien quelques scènes croustillantes ajoutées ! Du coup tout cela est bien gentil mais le tome se termine sur l'infatuation de Henry pour Fanny sans rien de Wild nin de Wanton...

Ce que j'aime : Bah le texte de Jane Austen mais ce n'est pas ça que j'attendais

Ce que j'aime moins : Le fait que "l'auteure" n'ait rien ajouté !

En bref : Je relis Mansfield Park (en VO cette fois) sans aucun changement au texte dont je me souviens (et Mansfield n'est pas mon préféré !) Donc je ne vous refais pas ma chronique de l'original mais pour celui-ci je dirais que c'est une vaste perte de temps et d'argent ! Ce tome 1 ne tient aucune de ses promesses et j'espère que le tome 2 rattrapera l'ensemble....
