Well Intended, But ...
I've reviewed many children's picture books but rarely see nonfiction ones. This book provides many facts about stuttering, including its prevalence in both children and adults and how to approach it best if your child has this communication challenge. At the end of the book, the author has a few pages just for parents and caregivers about specific ways to approach speech and communication with a child who stutters and online resources to help.
The book is intended for children between the ages of five and eight, and the younger children of this age range will need help reading it because of complicated words and concepts. Even if they don't—and for the older children of the age range as well—it would be best read with a parent or caregiver anyway so certain concepts can be reinforced, and the child will know that the parent/caregiver understands and wants to help. I wasn't wild about the illustrations. They looked too generic and didn't reflect the text. I could understand the latter would be difficult given the subject matter, but the text and the pictures seemed wholly disassociated. I wonder if this would have been better told in story format to help the child engage more, though I'm not typically a fan of message-heavy fictional stories for children. The book did have one oddity that I do plan to inform the author of. One page appears to have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with stuttering. Instead, it provides a trivia factoid about flies and jaguars!
Despite its flaws, a family facing this challenge could find it helpful to both better understand it and to assist the family in improving communication, even if “it’s just the way” a family member talks.
I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
