Second title in the 'Bound by A WEB OF WYRD' trilogy, a dark-themed retelling of vampire origin based on Norse Gods in a modern, post-Ragnarǫk setting.
Kjan
Control.
It’s more than a habit. It’s survival. Until fear of losing Eve challenges his beliefs.
There’s only one thing that scares him more. Or rather someone: His Sire.
To protect Eve from the Ancient One, Kjan must surrender the one thing he has always relied on.
***
Kjartan
A mind for a mind. A simple switch.
After escaping his physical prison, the curse on the immortal’s body persists. His plan? Claim a new vessel.
But when the transference leaves him with an unexpected passenger and holes in his memory, he develops a possessive fascination with a woman whose face has been haunting him. Will the irresistible power she wields unlock his destiny or will his blind obsession with her become his undoing before he can make the transfer permanent?
***
Eve
His body is her weakness, inciting desires she can’t resist.
But what if someone were to use it against her? Every touch turns into a weapon, a connection she can’t fight.
Will the hand that once saved her life become her destruction?
***
Three lives entwined. Yielding is not an option.
Readers are encouraged to check the author's note inside the book for trigger warnings.
“I will always come back to you. Not even death could stop me.”
Renate Rowland has a way of roping me in with how she wraps the most brutal anxiety into something so addictive that I’ll gladly take the pain. Much like the first book of the Web of Wyrd series, this one is no different. Well… except maybe it hurt even more. 😭
‘Kjan had broken his oath. He’d pledged his life to her – his body, mind, and soul – and she’d believed his words.’
I doesn’t matter that I am romantic enough to always cling to the hope of a HEA. When Renate wants you to hurt, you will hurt. When she wants to rip your heart out, she will revel in doing just that.
‘Sometimes love just wasn’t enough to save someone. Not her love anyway.’
Soul Bound deprives us of what we’ve come to love in the first book and confronts us with an MMC so conflicting that up to the very end I was not sure how to really feel about him. He does the worst imaginable thing and thoroughly broke my heart with his actions, only to then morph from this obscure evil into something less easy to categorize and dismiss.
‘He would break her, though. Crush her little heart to pieces.’
Every second of the way, I felt Eve’s fight, her contradictory emotions, her crippling fears and insecurities. It didn’t really help that I knew something she didn’t, namely that what she’d thought she’d lost was still closer than she could guess. The suspense was intense enough that it took me a while to finish the book. Not because I didn’t very urgently need to find out what would happen but because the emotional overload was so real that I needed actual recovery breaks.
“You are like a song stuck in my head, Eve. The lyrics, so familiar, repeating over and over, and yet I cannot recall the title.”
Soul Bound is, in my opinion, a worthy sequel to Blood Bound, playing on dynamics that at times feel too real for comfort while once again incorporating Norse Mythology in a captivating way. The newly introduced side characters were a fun and necessary addition without taking up too much space and no relationship, no person is as they were at the beginning of the book. With Soul Bound, Renate lays the groundwork for what I am sure will be a breathtaking finale in the third book.
I think it's impossible for me to write this review without spoilers, but I will try to be as vague as possible.
Oh, my heart!!! This book was everything I wanted and more. After reading Blood Bound late last year, Kjan and Eve stayed in my head. My love for them grew and grew, and when I would see the teasers the author would post for Soul Bound, I would get so anxious. I had to remind myself that of course the happy ending can't happen yet because this is a trilogy and there is some shi!t to go through still, lol! And what a ride this was.
The beginning of this book started so well. Even though I knew the other shoe was going to drop eventually, I still loved seeing the interactions of Kjan and Eve as they settled into their life together. Just the simple mundane things can be so beautiful when it's shared with the person you love. Their happiness shined through the pages for me and it made it even more bittersweet knowing it wouldn't last. I started crying a little over a hundred pages in and my heart was clenching so tightly in my chest. I don't know if I can explain it properly, but the whole build up to the transference and Eve finding out she was alone after was just haunting and aching and sorrowful. I felt everything.
Then my emotions shifted to anger, lol!! I already knew in my head that I didn't like Kjartan and boy, did his actions constantly reinforce my dislike. There were times I did start to have sympathy for him, then he would wipe it away with his next actions or words. Talk about whiplash! I found it interesting that he is so old, but I don't think he really ever matured past the age that he was originally stuck in that cave. He never experienced life himself or the human / god interactions out in the world, where he could develop emotionally. He experienced things through other people's memories by tasting their blood. Maybe it was a symptom of him not having all of his memories after the transfer that made him seem so lost. Either way, his character was definitely interesting to try and figure out.
I really enjoyed seeing more of the Norse mythology throughout the book. I still think most of it went over my head, but I found it so interesting. The runes and legends and gods. It added a certain feel to the book, of something ancient that has been lost to time. The past is still present in today though, it just looks different. It was also adding another layer to what was first presented in Blood Bound and it was like a lightbulb was going off for me as to what made Kjan different from other vampires. I'm so interested to see what is coming next in Oath Bound, because I was left with the feeling of something bigger and darker looming on the horizon.
I read this book in chunks due to outside forces, but when I was finally able to sit down for a prolonged period, I read over 300 pages in one sitting! I was hooked in by the story and characters, wondering what was going to happen next and the buildup to the exiting finish. My emotions were all over the place. I cannot recommend this series enough to people who love a good paranormal thriller romance. Seriously one of the best vampire books I've read!
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I can’t even put into words how much I loved this book. It’s one of my favorite books!
When I started reading it I honestly had no idea where it was going to go. Talk about some jaw dropping twists. The plot was so good and intense!
There were so many emotional parts too. I wanted to cry, scream, swoon and cry again. I was all over the place.
I’m unsure if I was supposed to be rooting for the villain…but of course I was. Even through the book and his morally grey actions I couldn’t hate him.
Two souls, one body, and Eve's life gets turned upside down.
I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC copy from Renate! I was a huge fan of Blood Bound, and Soul Bound expanded on the love story between Kjan and Eve, as well as the unique blend of vampirism meets Norse mythos. But it's not just a love story. Its gut-wrenching. Its suspenseful. It hurts the soul in just the right way seeing these two lovers deal with a threat that could end everything they know in the blink of an eye. The relationship between Kjan and Eve is by no means "healthy", but it hits the sweet spot of "He's lowkey toxic but I'm into it."
And Kjartan. KJARTAN. No spoilers but this man had my blood boiling but I loved every second he was on the page. Also, Kristjan can call me.
Wow, this book truly exceeded all my expectations! From the very start, I was hooked. I loved seeing Kjan and Eve settle into their lives together—it really highlighted the beauty of their relationship. But, of course, all good things must come to an end, and the emotional rollercoaster that followed is still on my mind. And then there’s Kjartan. He’s such a complex character and did things that made me literally yell at the book, like he could hear me. He drove me crazy, but in the best way possible.
One thing I really appreciated was the pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book. It made reading the story so much easier and helped me better understand the world-building.
Honestly, I think it’s safe to say I’d read anything this author writes. I’m already counting down the days until book 3 comes out!
First off if you have not read the first book Blood Bound definitely do it.
Part two of this trilogy was just as amazing as Renate other books! If you’re looking for a book full of emotions that keeps you on a roller coaster until the last page this series is exactly what you’re looking for! From page one I was pulled (back) into this story of Kjan and Eve. Page after page I was immersed and literally found myself devouring this book much the same as the first! Renate has out done herself AGAIN just like she does with everything! If I could give this book a 10 star rating I would! This is another amazing read by Renate!!!!
Thoughts 💭 The #1 con to being an ARC reviewer is having to wait for the next book from an author with little to no recaps available because they aren't “mainstream”. Indie authors deserve to have recaps plastered all over the interweb, especially when another book is coming out in the series. Thankfully for the search bar, I was able to piece a lot of the story I had forgotten back together again!
Now for the meat and potatoes of Soul Bound. I found it better than the first, a lot of the world building and foundation is already established from the first book so it really jumps right in. I was excited to see how Kjan and Eve were doing and what turmoil was going to happen in this book. I was NOT expecting the intricacies of the plot so quickly off the jump. I didn’t anticipate the roller coaster ride of feelings I would have while reading.
There were moments where I was frustrated with Kjan, wanting to knock some sense into him. Then times where I was angry with Eve’s decisions and would often facepalm myself when her angst would get her into more trouble. I personally LOVE characters that aren’t always the smartest/most lovable. It was beautiful reading about how much they fought and loved one another.
With 1 final book left in the trilogy, Soul Bound ended on an emotional cliffhanger. Was there too much damage done? Will they be able to come back from everything that happened? I am looking forward to the release of Oath Bound, coming in the spring!
Soul Bound by Renate Rowland is book teo in the Web of Wyrd Series. After I read the first book, which I absolutely enjoyed; I was thrilled to see this book. I couldn’t contain my excitement when I read the blurb to be taken back to this world. I will mention to check your content warnings to be on the safe side. This took me a little over a day to read because I was soaking in all the lore. I will also say to read book one before diving into the next one. I really enjoyed reading this story as it highlighted and expanded on the first book. The world just keeps getting better and better. The storyline just keeps pulling you in where you have to keep reading to find out what happens next… it can definitely give you a one more chapter syndrome. The writing was done so well. The plot/storyline can take you on a rollercoaster of a ride with everything. Also something I really appreciated was there was a pronunciation guide in the book, which makes it easier for me with the attention it helps with the flow. If you’re a huge mythology fan particularly Norse than I would highly recommend this!
Oh. My god. That was a rollercoaster of emotions, but to be fair, I expect nothing less when it comes to Renate. The perfect sequel to a fantastic first in series, and I am now going to be on the edge of my seat waiting for the next installment.
Spoiler free: Eve is still a woman after my own heart. I can feel her heartbreak and all that spunk and sarcasm just underneath lying in wait makes her in my eyes (and in Kjan’s and in Kjartan’s) the perfect soul to go to war for. Kjan is still such a nerd in the best of ways, and I could listen to him talk for hours. Kjartan is the epitome of heartbreaking, and for the life of me, I could not bring myself to outright hate him. He is the perfect villain in this twist of fate.
I cannot wait to see what happens next. I’m emotionally invested, and I’m trusting Renate with my heart, which I’m pretty sure makes me a masochist, but eh, what can I say? I like what I like ;)
Renate Rowland has crafted another masterpiece in this trilogy and shown how well she can create so much emotional damage in a single book.
The devastating scenarios between Eve and Kjan start off close to the beginning of the book as the plot unfolds because Kjan’s sire has shown up in Portland ready to wreak havoc.
The book is written in third person dual point of view which adds depth and emotion to the story, completely immersing the reader in the minds of the two main characters.
Rowland expertly weaves information about the Futhark Runes, Norse Gods, and Norse Mythology into the story to provide context to readers who are unfamiliar with the tales. As a fellow Norse Pagan, I felt that Rowland preserved the tales of the Gods while also creating her own narrative around a son of Iðunn and Hoðr who doesn’t exist in the original myths but is key to her choice to make this series a vampire origin story that occurs post Ragnarök.
Set mostly in Oregon, the PNW backdrop provides a beautiful setting full of nature and connection with the earth.
Kjartan is the ultimate morally grey character in this book. He struggles with his own personal vendetta, trauma, and conflicting emotions while trying to assimilate himself into the modern world. His relationship and interactions with Eve are the most conflicting because of his possessive tendencies as well as heartache.
With regard to spice for this book, Rowland hits the reader right off the bat with an intimate scene in chapter one but the intimacy between characters isn’t the main premise of the plot.
Overall, this book kept me sucked in through the entire thing as I wondered what would be thrown my way next as a reader. The emotional damage through numerous sections of the book had me shocked, sad, and joyful simultaneously.
Holy. WOW. I don’t think I’ve got anything at all done for two days because I was too busy reading this book. (Who needs sleep or to work anyway). Look, I love a good mythology book, but this one takes the cake in Norse mythology. However, even if you don’t fully understand Norse mythology you can read this book and not get lost. I really love how it was pulled more into this book. I just overall, am in love with this series and if I could read it again for the first time I definitely would. If you follow my reviews, you know I don’t give 5 stars lightly so that should tell you a lot! I really don’t want to spoil anything in this book because it’s just that good, so just take my word for it and go read the book, okay? Okay. 😊
I was waiting for Soul Bound to come out ever since I finished reading the first book. I loved how we get to see more interactions between Eve and Kjan. This second book pulled on all my heart strings. I was smiling and laughing one minute and in the next I saw sad and crying.
I also loved that there was more Norse Mythology in the book. This added a bit more of an ancient feel to the book and help me to understand how and why things happened the way they did.
I can’t wait for the third book to come out. This is becoming one of my favorite series to read so far.
• Vampire urban fantasy. References to Norse mythology, with Norse rituals depicted. • Violence, control & manipulation. Dark themes. Heed author’s trigger warnings. • Kjan’s origins finally revealed. His Sire, Kjartan, returns with an offer having dire consequences should he refuse. • Eve finally has everything she’s wanted with Kjan, and life is good until – • Kjartan, aka The Ancient One. Powerful, plays by his own rules, fears nothing and no one. • Plenty of drama & angst, betrayal, suspense, twists. Explicit sex.
It was good, but I felt like the story needed to be explained a little more.
The different POVs were written much better this time, so it was easier to follow.
I didn't understand Eve's actions with the "Ancient One" (best way I can explain without spoilers). Kjan was still closed off and didn't really show up/open up until the last 10% of the book. I was expecting more from book 2, but it felt like the story was lacking.
Another fantastic book by Renate Rowland!! I want to thank her for providing me with an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved the heightened tension in this book. Rowland does a fantastic job at keeping you on the edge of your seat. This book weaves in all-too-real emotions with norse mythology. It was a fantastic follow-up to Blood Bound.
I love this story between kjan and eve. Soul blood had be at the edge of my seat through the entire book. I had so many emotions going on. The author of this book grabs you and keeps you wanting more I CANNOT wait for oath bound I recommend this trilogy to all of my friends
Beyond captivating in both storyline and storytelling. Eve is incredibly strong and has so much to work through. Her story with Kjan turned heartbreaking, it really took a turn that had me feeling all the emotions. There is so much to this book and I can't wait to read the next book.
I highly recommend reading the first book and prequel novella in this series prior to reading this one or you may not be able to fully grasp the phenomenal storyline and characters, missing the truly amazing experience of reading this part of the story.
This part of the story picked up with Kjan and Eve and their lives blossoming together. You can’t help but feel the love flowing through the pages. They deserve all the happiness. Kjan and Eve are one of my favorite couples. They kind of stick with you and are easy to resonate with. But with the ups, there inevitably comes the downs. Kjartan and his new vessel are on the hunt to find the woman who haunts his soul. But, Kjartan is so easy to despise, and his part in this storyline just amplified it. Although sometimes I did feel sort of bad for him because it was as if he didn’t quite get to experience life before his change which explains why he acts the way he does. However, still not a good guy!
As if your attention wasn’t immediate based on the plot alone, the Norse mythology that rippled throughout the book keeps you glued the pages. The spice was perfect and HOTTTT, but was not too much that it overwhelmed the story line. Twists that seem to come out of nowhere and all the feels that will make you feel like you are at the edge of the cliff with the wind blowing you over the to a freefall of emotions. Renate really has a way of capturing your soul and holding hostage. Now, I hold my breath for book three.
