At first, I was disappointed with this book, but on a second pass, I found that there's actually quite a few recipes I'm interested in trying. There are some holiday classics for cooks who don't already have a turkey, stuffing, "wife saver," or cranberry sauce recipe in their arsenal.

Lots of interesting-sounding appetizers and desserts. There aren't many photos, for those who like pictures of each dish, and if you've already got a Best of Bridge collection, you probably have most of these recipes. I don't think there were many, if any, new ones in this book.

The lame jokes are the same. Will update once I've tried something.

What do you get when a group of friends together for a card game and the best part of it is the food? You have the beginnings of a great cookbook series. Eight woman from Canada came together weekly to produce a variety of recipes spiked with some humorous quotes. Three million copies of their 12 cookbooks later…I’d say they have a sustainable winning combination worth your look.

Their current collection of 225 recipes for special occasions, Best of Bridge Holiday Classics, is a compilation of the Bridge ladies’ favorite holiday recipes, along with some new recipes just to keep things interesting. On page 21 you’ll find the time saving Christmas Morning Wife-Saver (recipe include at the end of this article). The Committee Salad is a fresh healthy concoction featuring Sunflower seeds, almonds, almonds, avocados and mandarin oranges (page 90). They had me at the name, but the finished product is elegant and buffet worthy on its own.

If you’re a dessert nut like me, you’ll appreciate the Fruit and Nut Shortbread cookie recipe on page 230 (recipe included below). It looks and tastes divine. The Lemon Berry Cake (page 266) is a cake-lovers dream project. It’s easier to make than it sounds and should impress the heck out of your friends. Just sayin’.

If you’re yearning for some spice in your life, try the Cajun Crab Cakes with Herb Dipping sauce (page 110). The Beer Braised Chili with Black-Eyed Peas (page 128) is a true eye opener with its chipotle peppers in Adobe sauce.

I find the two chapters dedicated to leftovers and gifts a bonus. Who doesn’t want some ideas on converting leftovers into a second chance delicious meal? Dishes like Thai-Style Beef Salad (page 222) and Lamb and Pita Salad (page 228) are a few of my favorites. If you’re one of those people who loves to gift homemade items you’ll be impressed with ideas for Hot Pepper Orange Chutney (page 291) and Cranberry Pistachio Brittle (284).

Finally, what would a girlfriend’s cookbook be without a bit of sassy humor? Sprinkled amongst the pages are some real zingers that will bring a smile to your face. My best friend Adrianne loves this one, “Never put a child wearing superman pajamas on the top bunk.” I think that is an ode to her son. My favorite is, “I read some recipes the way I read science fiction. I get to the end and I think, Well that’s not going to happen.” Anyone who knows my zero tolerance policy with a cranky mixer knows that one was meant for me. And, perhaps this one has meaning for you? “Rely on the rabbit’s foot if you must, but remember it didn’t work for the rabbit.”

Be happy and creative my foodie friends. Enjoy the following recipes from a group of women who know how to have fun; something we should all strive for – especially during the holidays.

Classic, nostalgic recipes fill this cookbook. The hardcover, spiral binding is a nice touch. Enjoy classics like Artichoke Dip, Green Goddess Salad, Poached Salmon, Christmas Cheese Balls, Shortbread, Ceasar Salad, Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. Whether you are cooking for a Holiday Brunch, Cocktail Party, Buffet, Potluck, Sit-Down Dinner or just using up leftovers, you are sure to find something here. I used the Cranberry Muffin recipe substituting milk for the orange juice and Chopped strawberries for the cranberries. My kids demolished them! The cookbook ends with a section on Food Gifts. This is a lovely chapter of Candied Almonds, Spiced Pecans, Cranberry Pistachio Bark, Toffee, Marmalade, Chutney and more. The "Novel Nuts" were a huge hit at the family Christmas dinner!

This is a great, nostalgic cook that is great fun to read through and to cook from.

I received a copy of this cookbook from Robert Rose, Inc. for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
