I Quit Being A Christian To Follow Jesus

HAS THE NAME "CHRISTIAN" LOST IT'S POWER? "Lately I've felt like being a modern day Christian has left me wanting more. A growing constituency of "others" want more. I know there's more. Don't you really know this too? That fish on the back of your car really DOES mean something. Its purpose should be more than merely enticing someone to honk and wish you a nice day if, indeed, you didn't just cut them off. The concert isn't over. The best music --- the music and song we long to hear --- has not disappeared or been rerouted to China. We've just stepped strangely and temporarily off the stage. I sense God wants to bring us back for a fist-pumping encore. Let's scream, cheer, write, pray, search, and hunger until the real music plays again. There is soon to be more music reverberating a challenging melody. Maybe Christians and Jesus followers everywhere will raise their Bic lighters into the air and begin wearing, again, the impeccable name of Jesus. Let's explore some specific strategies to help get us there." - Alan Scott SHOULD WE JUST QUIT? I Quit Being A Christian To Follow Jesus is a challenging study birthed from the book of Luke. In this timely book, specific passages of scripture and strategies are explored to regain meaning to the much-maligned name of "Christian."

If I didn't already belong to a church that stresses the importance of following Jesus over religious practices/behaviors/"being good enough", this would have been more compelling for me. While it didn't dive as deep as I hoped, it has practical advice and tips for those who are curious to switch from passive faith to a Holy Spirit-guided life.

The part I enjoyed most was the chapter emphasizing how Jesus can use whatever we give him, no matter how small the offering. If two loaves and some fish can feed a crowd with leftovers, our gifts and talents can multiply just the same when we surrender them. I believe this because I've seen it play out in front of me.

That said, the book was in dire need of a professional editor. I had to catch myself reading it like a critique partner/proofer vs. absorbing the content. And...maybe—even though I'm a sucker for crude humor—less use of the word "butt". I appreciate the author's honesty and using natural speech, but it did almost come across as irreverent at times. Personal preference.

Book Review: I Quit Being a Christian to Follow Jesus by Alan Scott

book-review-i-quit-being-a-christian-to-follow-jesus-by-alan-scott-b
This book is a study centered around the book of Luke and each chapter starts off with a short passage from Luke to read. Also included are personal stories, a few quotes from other Christians and lots and lots of questions.

One of its biggest pluses is all the questions. It seems to be loaded with them. These questions are one way this book helps you to think differently.

I enjoyed Mr. Scott’s writing style and found it conversational, pleasant, and not stuffy but real and authentic. Plenty of times it made me smile, too.

The author includes different perspectives or “spins” on the topics that he has chosen to talk about from Luke but I did not feel any of them were unbiblical. Instead I found it to just be a challenge to think and act differently or even just to think, period.

One of my biggest takeaways was that there isn’t just one way to view anything.

If you enjoy books that challenge your thinking then you should give this book a look!
