The Primer of Zinnie Lucas was a unique and eye opening chapbook experience. I made the mistake of opening up to one of the middle pages at the end of the week to read one or two of the poems and remember getting ignored and pushed away by the poetry. It just wasn’t speaking to me the way I thought it would and that was very disappointing to me because I was for sure it would; the name and the cover art looked to be so promising and I guess I was just judging a book by it's cover. So I set the collection of poems down and waited till later to start from the beginning, but that was my problem in the first place: I didn’t start from the beginning. I appreciated and eventually found out that The Primer of Zinnie Lucas might not be a collection of poems at all but could in fact be one large poem stretched out over 25 pages. All that does matter is that I got something out of this work when I read it from cover to cover, and what I got was good.
