Uncle Bob's Red Flannel Bible Camp
Uncle Bob's Red Flannel Bible Camp: From Eden to the Ark
"The Bible is full of battles and death-defying escapes and lions and even a dragon or two. There is war and there are heroes and there is more special effects than you could shake a star cruiser at." - UNCLE BOB This book is a re-telling of the first few stories of the Old Testament. I wrote it thinking about the way that my grandparents and uncles would tell me of the Bible stories in their own unique fashion - rather than just reading it out loud. Paraphrasing and exaggeration were frequent - and frequently funny. I liked that approach a lot. You see, to me, those old boys - Adam and Moses and Abraham and Cain and all those others were folks like you or me. They didn't REALLY know that they were supposed to be biblical. They were just trying to get on with their day - same as you or me. So sit down and read the Holy Word - just the way my Uncle Bob told it to me.

Noah and what's her name?
The title was intriguing, 'Uncle Bob's Red Flannel Bible Camp - From Eden to the Ark'... I went ahead and got the book. Oh my goodness! I only meant to read the first few paragraphs and before I knew it.. I'd finished the entire book in one sitting!
An adorable story about a little boy who's just had enough of Sunday school. He goes to school for five days and doesn't understand or have the desire to sit through one more day of "school". As he's playing hookie his Uncle Bob catches up with the little guy and fully sympathizes with the Sunday school giving the same old stories week after week. Uncle Bob decides to give the kid his interpretation of Genesis! What a riot! I especially loved the story of Noah and what's her name!
Superbly told.. quick and easy reading. So, light up one.. sit back.. and enjoy being made in his image!

I don't prefer this book.
Although in the beginning the book seemed a little humorous to me and interesting, as I continued reading it I started to see areas of comments that concerned me where it was taking away from God, what he created or giving Him credit for creations because of what the character Uncle Bob prefers. For example, a comment that was very non-biblical to the point of calling He who made brussels sprouts not holy, although jesting, God is who made the brussel sprouts, the wild cabbage. I don't like them either. Yucky. But I still want to give glory to God for His creation. So, I don't prefer this book because it takes away from giving the glory to God where it is due.

Uncle Bob is the red-flannel-shirt-wearing narrator, telling his nephew about the action running through what the youngster thinks of as a dry book. (Bob nabs the lad escaping from Sunday School.) Uncle Bob promises:
I picture Uncle Bob as a cross between Red Green and Bill Cosby's Noah routine, but a bit more off-the-wall. If you don't like offbeat humour, this is not the book for you. It's not for children, but teens and adults will find some chuckles and the occasional insight.
Some readers will find the book irreverent. If that's you, give it a miss.
Personally, I chalk those moments up to Uncle Bob's hyperbole and his figures of speech. What he's trying to do is personalize God to the nameless nephew in the context of men the boy would know from his community.
The book gave me a few smiles, and I hope Uncle Bob can encourage readers to check into the Bible for themselves. With biblical literacy ebbing, a fresh delivery of the classic stories may be just what people need to spark an interest.
Author Steve Vernon is a storyteller, and what richer source of tales than the Bible? For more about the author and his other books, visit his blog, Yours in Storytelling.

March 4, 2014Okay – so I am a little nervous releasing this sort of a book considering I have made my bones thirty-five years as a writer of horror fiction and ghost stories – but dang it, I have ALWAYS loved the old Bible Stories and at the heart of it that’s what I am – is an honest to goodness storyteller.
So here goes nothing.
Let me tell you about this book.
The book is called Uncle Bob’s Red Flannel Bible Camp: From Eden To The Ark and it is told in the voice of my Uncle Bob – a raconteur of the old school – a man who never had an opinion that he did not care to venture.
What the book is trying to be is a re-telling of the first few stories of the Old Testament told in a more comfortable, countrified style. I wrote it thinking about grown-ups and older kids and the ways that my grandfather and uncles would tell me some of the legends and tales and bible stories in their own unique fashion – rather than just reciting from the Bible.
You see, to me, those old boys – Adam and Moses and Abraham and Cain – and all those other folks – were most likely folks like you or me. They didn’t REALLY know that they were supposed to be biblical. They were just trying to get on with their day to day duties – just the same as you or me.
This is the first book of a series that WILL continue on throughout the rest of the Old Testament and right on through the New Testament.
You can pick up a copy right now on Amazon or Kobo - if you'd like.

Having read other books by this author I was a bit worried about how he would handle this!
My worst fear was not realized but my second, third and fourth fear was.
Meet God. He only needs a smoke break on the third day of creation.
He is obviously not a chain smoker. Lol.
Then all the smiting and begetting...oh my.
On the ark, one of the sons wanted to have the ark painted in candy floss pink.
This above is the general tone of the stories. Mostly chronologically correct and loosely sticking to the general story line this book was fun.
As a Christian I was not at any time offended. Although I might not be the best judge of offensive material I wish to believe that grownups is well....mature enough to deal with the tongue-in-cheque manner with which the Bible is dealt with.
In all, probably not ideal for a 6 year old but a really good read for a grownup with the magic of a 6 year old still in their souls.

OMG! Laughed till I cried throughout! Took me a while to finish it today (short book) because I couldn't keep the tears out of my eyes to see the words! Genesis in the words of an ole country man with a knack for storytelling. I would love to have an Uncle Bob :) I think Steve Vernon might just have a red flannel shirt hidden in the back of his closet ;) I can't say enough about this gut busting easy to understand (if your from the country anyway) bible story.. I look forward to reading more from Uncle Bob's Red Flannel Bible Camp. Now off to dry my eyes since I'm still thinking about this hilarious story! Oh and I would have given it 10 stars but didn't have that option. ;)
P.S. I loved it so much I immediately went a gifted a copy to my sister!

Just the right book to read on Palm Sunday, when all the young children are running around between houses with local "palms" to bless the houses (and to get some goodies in return) all nicely dressed up.
First of all, as the title already sugggests, this is not a normal retelling for children of the stories of the bible, but a funny view from one Uncle Bob on what the stories in the Bible could be all about.
If you love a funny book, have a sense of humour and are willing to take the Bible in another way than word for word as it has been written there, you will certainly enjoy this story (it was free when I got it!)
Looking very much forward to the next stories Uncle Bob has to tell in his Red Flannel Bible Camp!
