In the interest of full disclosure I should declare that I have no idea how to tat. Many years ago I tried and did not grasp the technique although I still have the shuttle. Off and on over the years I’ve thought I should try again. With the New Year comes a renewed thought of trying to learn again. As far as I can tell, tatting is most useful as a decoration or for making doilies. It appears to be unlike crochet or knitting which can create a wide variety of clothing, accessories and articles for the home.
I decided to look at this book as the pictures appear to be clear, the text understandable, and, dare I say it? There are now videos on line to help augment the learning process. Up until now I’ve never been able to learn this skill just from a book.
My goal, having read the book, is to now go back with tat shuttle in hand and try some decorative touches.
There are several pages at the beginning devoted to how exactly one creates each stitch and there are beautiful color photos of tatting being used to adorn clothing and household items. Some patterns are for useful items such as small baskets, sachets, and doilies. Some are decorative edgings.
I will be starting with one-shuttle one-yarn patterns although this book also has two-shuttle multi-color yarn patterns. So what caught my attention? A yoke collar to attach to a shirt or dress and a flower brooch.
Wish me luck!

I've been meaning to learn how to tat, which I just recently came across. I hadn't heard about his craft, and I can't really remember how I heard about it. I borrowed this book from the library and really love the information it gives you, the pictures and the instructions. I bought the shuttle and the tatting needles, but wasn't able to get my hands on to actually start working. Soon, I'll be able to tat in my sleep ;-)

Lavish photographs but unfortunately not all of the items photographed have a corresponding pattern leaving the tatter frustrated and disappointed. Still, good as a coffee-table book to show friends what it can do.
