The Boston Red Sox are one of the most iconic baseball teams, representing not just a city or a state, but an entire region--they're the only professional baseball team in New England. Baseball immortals Tris Speaker and Babe Ruth wore the uniform early in their careers and many other great players, including Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Rice, Wade Boggs, and Pedro Martinez have played with New England's beloved ball club. Sports historian Robert W. Cohen has chosen the 50 best ever to play for the Sox and profiles their exploits. Chances are you'll find your favorite player here.
A very good compilation of the best 50 Red Sox's players, you may disagree with some of the positions, but that is just the nature of these kind of books. However, it includes 50 short biographies of the best Red Sox ever, which together are a very enjoyable read.
This is a tremendously fun book and I am sure Red Sox fans will greatly enjoy reading it. Unlike a number of Red Sox books Robert Cohen did his homework and realized there were Red Sox players before 1995. Smart work for including Smokey Joe Wood, Tris Speaker and Frank Malzone in the top 50s. We can argue for months on the order of things, I for one think Jason Varitek and Jacoby Ellsbury deserved a much higher ranking and the non-inclusion of Bob Stanley is a major loss. A listing of some great managers would have been fun but I know it's about the players. There are some pretty obvious typos throughout the book including one on the back cover which can only be blamed on the editor but still it detracts from the book. None the less this is a fun book for Sox fans.
