The Maltings - a popular, cosy village inn, in Fife, Scotland. The flip side- it’s a hotbed of secrets, lies and affairs. Some secrets are huge, dangerous even, and those who keep them, want them kept hidden. So, what possessed Jennifer Cameron to (underhandedly) purchase The Maltings from her husband? A challenge? His affair? Revenge? How will she cope? Will she succeed? The staff dislike her. The locals don’t care for her. All her fault.
Follow her precarious, often hilarious, journey as the new proprietor.
Sleeping Partners is a "fictional" story about the goings on of a small village, centered around the local pub and all the patrons and villagers lives within it. Set in Scotland in the early 80's there are some fun references to popular cultural of that time.
I particularly liked the main protagonist Jen Cameron and her inner strength when faced with some very difficult life events. She seemed to keep calm and carry on with sheer determination.
The village gossip and extra martial affairs that occur were like something from a Jilly Cooper novel and the opening scene with the pool table is a fun way to enter the town of Duneden and doesn't disappoint in this regard.
Having grown up in a small village in Fife, with a local pub at the heart of it this book felt very familiar to me! Sometimes the author (who I know) had me questioning what was fictional and what was semi autobiographical!
It was a great fun read, with a reassuring ending and I'm very happy for Jen and her new life.
