Tales of the Grove #2

Tempted from the Oak

Rate this book
With his blue eyes and heart-melting smile, Gavin could have been made-to-order to entice Tearlach, a lonely tree spirit. But the human has been enticed—stolen from snow-buried Minneapolis to the Scottish

Highlands by Tearlach’s darag, the ancient oak tree of which he is the living spirit.

Tearlach is trapped within the darag by the terrible memory of his own death—hundreds, maybe thousands of years ago, but as recent to him as his last heartbeat. And if desire for the handsome human fails to tempt him out, spirit and oak are both doomed.
Gavin is more than willing to be Tearlach’s temptation. But Gavin has a history of his own—a hopeless dream, one impossible relationship after another. Surely a perfect lover, a sensual tree spirit living in the shadow of a holy mountain half a world away, is another unattainable dream. Can he expect Tearlach to trust his heart when he doesn’t trust it himself?

I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this book and decided to just let it flow and surprise me. Well, it definitely surprised me. I can honestly say that I have never read anything like this book before, and even struggled at first while trying to figure out which category it even belonged in…fantasy, otherworld, magic-user? I settled on fantasy and decided to go with the flow. It was extremely well written, descriptive, and was very poetic, especially for a MM romance novella.

Tearlach is one with his Darag, his Oak tree. They share a spirit and have been together for over two thousand years. However, Tearlach can manifest into a man and leave the tree during the nights. He meets the human, Gavin, and they have an instant connection, and near instant make-out session. In Gavin’s defense, he did believe he was dreaming, so I give him a pass on the naughty behavior with the beautiful tree sprite. The gist of the story is the budding romance between Tearlach and Gavin and how they are going to make this interspecies relationship work.

This is a short novella so things move pretty quickly. I was enthralled with the beautiful writing and the Scottish words, but I found that it took me quite a bit of time to understand exactly what was going on. Considering I do not normally read fantasy this was a laborious feat but once I was got rolling I could appreciate the creative brilliance in this writers works.

REVIEW: Tearlach is one of the Gille Dubh, or Dark Ones-ancient tree spirits who are the living half of their darag, or ancient oak tree. Trapped within his darag by the terrible memory of his death-to him, it’s as though it just took place, even though it happened hundreds of years ago, his fear keeps him from leaving his darag at night.

Gavin Cross’s life is in shambles. After getting his M.F.A. in Scenic Design, he moves halfway across the country to live with his boyfriend Jeremy, and hopes to fulfill his dream of working at the Guthrie Theater. Just four days before Christmas, his boyfriend breaks up with him, and tells him that he has until the New Year to find another place to live. He finds himself drawn to an oak tree in a park, not knowing that an ancient oak will transport him to the Scottish Highlands, hoping that Gavin can entice a traumatized Tearlach to leave his prison, and find true love before both he and his darag are doomed.

Tempted From the Oak is the second entry in Rory Ni Coileain’s fascinating new series Tales From the Grove, a spinoff from her SoulShare series. This plot driven story pulls you deep into Rory’s beautiful and richly detailed world where, after thousands of years, magick is starting to reappear in our world-bringing ancient beings and powers to life again. Her writing style is unique, eloquently original, and concise, and she crafts a enthralling tale that takes you far away from the mundane. The men are hot, the sex is even hotter, and the HEA ending left me completely spellbound. If you want something that is definitely not your average fairy tale, then this is the book for you.
