I’ve read a lot of parenting books over the years, but Fresh Start Your Family is easily one of the most comprehensive and impactful ones I’ve come across.
What sets this book apart is how real and relatable Wendy Snyder is. She doesn’t write from a place of perfection. She’s honest, vulnerable, and shares her own struggles in a way that made me feel seen. I found myself both laughing and crying throughout, which is rare for a parenting book.
But this isn’t just inspiring. It’s also incredibly practical. The strategies are clear, actionable, and actually doable in real life. The focus on connection-based parenting and breaking old cycles really resonated with me and I walked away with tools I could start using immediately.
One of my favorite parts was the journal questions woven throughout the book. They helped me slow down, reflect, and actually implement what I was learning instead of just reading and moving on. And the plan at the end of the book? That’s what truly made this feel different. It helped me turn everything into action so this didn’t become “just another parenting book,” but a real catalyst for change in my home. It broke the book down into simple steps I could follow that lead to real change.
If you’re looking for a parenting book that is both deeply encouraging and highly practical, this is it. It will challenge you, support you, and give you a clear path forward.
I had the opportunity to be a part of the launch team for Wendy's book, and what an amazing experience it was. Her kindness, enthusiasm, and her great love for families is clearly expressed through her writing and her commitment to help parents learn a healthier way to guide their children through childhood and into adulthood.
This book is a great resource for parents in any stage of parenting, from birth through young adulthood. Throughout the book Wendy weaves much of her family's story and how they found positive parenting, with the work she has been doing helping other families of the past 15+ years create new patterns of communication, interaction and discipline, along with practical teaching, helping parents develop tool kits to use in daily life with children.
This book is not just a "how to" book, though there are lots of great sections with helpful practical advice. More importantly it is a "why we do" book. It is a book that introduces a third way parenting that is not authoritarian, punishment based, but also not permissive, conflict-avoidant parenting. Wendy teaches parents positive, powerful parenting that is based on love, respect, clear boundaries and communication, and grace-based discipline.
There are many things that set this book apart from others I have read over the past 25+ years but two of the most significant are teaching parents about how important it is for them to have calm, regulated nervous systems in order to practice effective powerful parenting and that all behavior is communication. Understanding these two things opens up a whole new world of parenting that can lead to closer relationships and more peaceful homes.
I thought this book was fantastic. I recommend it for a parent of any child, teen, or adult. I have taken Wendy's Foundations Course, and this book is a a great follow up to the course or stand alone if you haven't taken it. I appreciate Wendy's passion for teaching about kind, compassionate, and connected discipline. This book is a valuable resource for parents. I will be going back to it over ant over. I have an advance copy, and I can't wait until my physical copy arrives so I can mark it up. Wendy helps you recognize what a child is trying to communicate through different types of misbehavior. It has tools to guide you in correcting and empowering your children in a way that builds relationship. It has stories and examples throughout that help you picture what these parenting tools can look like in real life. Each chapter ends with practical ideas steps you can actually use today.
One thing I really loved is how organized this book is. Each chapter is well thought out, and builds upon the next. It presents the information in a way that does not leave you feeling overwhelmed, but empowered to move forward. I will be recommending this book a lot. I honestly think it is a book that is going to change many lives.
I can tell this book will be the parenting book I refer back to more than any other, again and again. I’ve been following Wendy Snyder and benefitting from her “powerful parenting” coaching for some time now, but reading her evidence-based approach in book format has helped the concepts resonate for me, a visual learner, in a new way. I so appreciate Wendy’s warm, approachable style, helping us heal our reactive patterns and learn new tools without shame. Her honest sharing of her own parenting ups and downs, mistakes and successes, is so disarming and helps me feel that I’m not crazy and maybe can actually learn to do this parenting thing in a way that feels aligned with who I want to be. The practical tips for how these strategies look in real life, help for “when things get messy” - because we all know they will! - journal prompts, and emphasis on progress and connection over perfection all truly make this book stand out from any other parenting book I’ve read. I’ll definitely be recommending Fresh Start Your Family to friends and family - it’s a gem!
Practical, encouraging, reflective, empowering. This book will help you become the parent you want to be, both for yourself and for your kids.
If you've felt overwhelmed, or wondered why parenting feels so hard, or wanted to do things differently than how you were raised but don't know where to start, welcome. This book is exactly the right place to begin -- to unravel what your children are communicating, to become a peace-bringer in your home, and to truly work together with your kids instead of feeling locked in a power struggle over every little thing. I love that this book exists and that I have a practical, healthy parenting guide to recommend.
I feel like this book was written for me. I struggle with my reactive parenting and I want to do better. This book is helping reshape the lens through which I see my daughter and how I interact with her. She is strong willed and that is a good thing. The big takeaway for me is that by even attempting the work of postive/powerful parenting, I’m not failing and my kid isn’t bad, she’s just communicating the best she can.
There’s lots of helpful tools in here and I recommend this book for parents who want to do things differently than how they were raised.
Wendy isn't regurgitating parenting advice. She's sharing lived experience that meets mistakes and regret with the hope of what could be. It's not gentle parenting and it's not blind obedience. This book will provide a new way path for connection with your kids, no matter their ages.
I endorsed this book: Wendy’s energetic and practical approach to positive parenting makes you feel like “you’ve got this!” Even for those of us shifting from the control-based way we were parented to grace-based discipline, Wendy shows how having a fresh start is possible.
