“Will you find my sister?” Those words send Stefan Kopriva, the former cop-turned-investigator, down a frustrating and baffling path after Laura Shelton. Is she running from an embezzlement charge? Or hiding from an abusive husband? People are talking but nothing they say is getting Kopriva closer to the truth. Who is the real Laura? Kind and caring? Desperate and guilt-ridden? Or was she ruthless and opportunistic? Kopriva won’t know until he finds her. If she’s still alive.
Search for a missing woman is clouded by lies and anger - 4.5 stars
Laura is missing. Her sister, Missy, wants a lawyer. Her Husband. Erik, wants to protect his home from foreclosure and to continue his partying life. Her employer, Fresh Pines, Cleaning, from whom she is accused of embezzling is devastated. The River City Police have all but given up on finding Laura, alive or dead,
Is there really a quarter million dollars stashed away? Stefan Kopriva is an ex-cop with over a decade of investigation experience who left the River City police force after four years following a terrible mistake. Stefan has a prosthetic which limits his walking speed but doesn't otherwise slow him down. He is good at getting people to talk even if he is a bit vague about his qualificationis. It has been a few weeks since she disappeared and the police have already investigated and come up empty, Stefan is talking to the same people that the police contacted; he has modest expectations of finding Laura alive.
The suspect list and details of the financial transgression vary into and out of focus. Almost everyone involved has some sort of extramarital activity with the husband's activities being more than sufficient to be the object of a posse of outraged citizens. Stefan manages to get copies of the thin police report without finding anything obvious. He doggedly tries to view and review the facts, occasionally finding nuggets to pursue along with many misdirections.
At the three-quarter mark, there are nearly a half dozen suspects each with a reason to have recently filled a shallow grave in a remote area. In the end, several surprises lead to a resolution that, while not happy, resolves most questions. I want to Stephen's adventures in follow-on stories.
This past week, I read three excellent books, Each in a different style; the one that sticks with me is Frank Zafiro's Think of Laura. The latest in the Stefan Kopriva Mysteries has the former cop searching for a woman who might be alive, dead, or even on the lam. Once I picked Zafiro's novel, I stopped for sleep and then finished. The story of Laura will grab you. I recommend getting it Now.
I truly could not put this book down until I finished it. It was worth a sleepless night. The characters are stunning, the story outstanding. Another superb addition in the Stefan Kopriva Mysteries series. Highly Recommended.
I always enjoy his books. I found a good mystery in his latest book, with questions of what was she really guilty of. Of her sister part, well she was family. It keep me to the end pages with surprises of how it did turn out I recommend his books to readers, I have always enjoyed them.
Lots of twists in this one as Stefan investigates a missing person case which is possibly so much more deadly. A compelling read with a sound storyline. Loved it.
