The battle to resist pornography is brutal. Its lure just seems too powerful.
We've tried for years to be strong, run away from temptation, and manage our desires in better ways. No matter how hard we try, though, we just can't get free from pornography. Some of us have lost all hope.
What if the battle you've been fighting isn't even the real battle?
What if using pornography is just a symptom of something deeper going on inside of you?
What if the things you are doing to protect yourself actually contribute to your obsession?
Have you had thoughts like I'm the only one struggling like this, God must be so ashamed of me, or I've got to get stronger to overcome this? These thoughts are common. But they are also lies.
10 Lies Men Believe about Porn holds these lies up against the truth of Scripture. You'll learn how they deceive us into missing out on the freedom Christ offers us. Ultimately, you'll discover that the message of the gospel isn't about learning to fight better--it's about no longer needing to fight at all. That is the type of freedom Jesus came to offer you. That's why they call it the Good News.
"You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32).
Stephen Kuhn has been leading recovery groups, speaking at college campuses, and providing free online counseling through Belt of Truth Ministries ever since he got steamrolled by Jesus and set free from the chains of porn addiction. His passion is to allow God to use the story of redemption in his life to encourage other men to seek healing through the work of Christ as well.
Like most native Oregonians, Stephen enjoys a good rain shower and probably drinks too much coffee. He spends his weekends hiking, climbing, and skiing, but his greatest joy is playing dress-up with his daughters.
To be completely honest, pornography and lust is an area I've always battled with. I was looking for Christian books on the subject and came across this book. I loved the author's transparency. He didn't sugarcoat anything and was open about his shortcomings. I think as Christians it's important to be an open book to the world and to let others know that we all struggle with sin. The good news is that we can looks towards Christ for strength and help. This was a good read and I highly recommend it to those that are struggling in this area. It's okay to be honest with ourselves and with God. We're human and need help to live a victorious life.
Although it pertains to porn addictions, it does not cover the psychological, emotional and or social triggers or causes for this disease. For a young or older man on how to combat this issue it only goes over a very biblical view instead. Which may be great for some, but not all who are looking for answers as well as the help want to turn to a bible for it (there are many books called bibles). Some need to understand of where the issue which sometimes controls their very lives on a few points: How it started; How it got so out of control; How to approach a souse or girlfriend about it; How to view it; How to change it.
This was a well written book with good information and valuable insight for those struggling with this issue. It is not a complete discussion of all the factors that may lead to an addiction, but it is a good resource/introduction to someone looking for help and for family members wanting to help a loved one who has asked for it.
I received this book for free as a part of the Goodread's First Reads program.
I got this book from a give away. It was not what I was expecting. However I was due to leave a review. I don't have to much to say beyond the fact I believe this gentlemen had/has some other internal issues going on that would be the real result to his addictive personality and I do not view it as being god or porn or satan. I'm just gonna leave it at that since I really don't want to be in a discussion.
There is so much about this book that everyone could learn from, not just men or people struggling with porn. Healing core wounds and finding freedom from the lies we believe is a universal struggle. That being said, I think this is a book that has been needed for a while, as porn has been such a silent struggle for so long. I learned and grew through reading it myself and would encourage anyone to pick it up as well.
The book is a mix of evangelical beliefs and the author's experiences. It seems to be a bit of an amalgam of other writer's thoughts. The author focuses primarily on the spiritual dimension of a person, suggesting implicitly that this will largely remedy a man's struggle with porn. Perhaps other men will relate to the author more than I do, however I wonder if it would have been more helpful if the author had more experience before writing this book.
