The realm of science-fiction grows closer and closer to reality and the “now”. The seemingly unrealistic or far-fetched dreams of robot servants or computers with minds of their own which have been touted in such shows as Star Trek and books like those written by Isaac Asimov, all seemed like that: stories. The seemingly limitless thoughts of dreaming authors who speculated as to what the future might hold. In The AI Singularity Experiments: The First Patient by Noah Tuya we are exposed to what seems like just another installation in the endless dreams of sci-fi writers, but it hits much closer to home. Our protagonist, Eva Simons, is a professor of Neurology and she and her team have poured their blood, sweat and tears into the creation of technology which allows them to inject patients with microneural network components to achieve artificial intelligence singularity.
The cause is noble: a treatment devised to support those who have been diagnosed with debilitating central nervous system problems to allow those affected to live again with the help of artificial intelligence. However, just because the initial conception of an idea is based around nobility does not mean it will remain that way. We follow Eva nearly around the world several times as she works together with sympathizers in the field in an effort to launch this treatment and begin human testing. The road is not easy to traverse, and we walk alongside Eva as she struggles.
The narration style, which blends third-person perspective with a slightly clinical tone, feels reminiscent of a movie script. This approach might be intended to create a distinct atmosphere or could become more relevant in later volumes. For this first volume, it offers a different kind of experience that might take some getting used to. While this story is titled The First Patient we really don’t learn anything about our patient, Natalia, until nearly the end of the book and at that point interest is waning.

It offers an intriguing addition to any bookshelf and holds promise for continued engagement as the series progresses.
