An intimate and personal view of the forgotten Hawaii, a glimpse into the culture and the lives of the true Hawaiians and the 'side' of the islands few tourists will ever see. - Jess Mowry, author of and Way Past Cool
I bought this little book at my library's book sale shelf for a buck fifty. It was signed by the author. I like stories about Hawaii. I didn't expect much from this book I never heard of and which seems to have no ratings on Amazon. But I was surprised. Amazed even. This book is chock full of pithy little 5-8 page stories which capture dramatic events in the life of local, rural Hawaiians. The description of the milieu is pitch perfect and the narrative is spare and dramatic. It was obviously written by someone who knows the territory and the people. Every story is tense and emotional and most have unexpected twists. It will stir your soul.
Rarely do I give a book 5 stars, especially not two in row, but this collection was excellent. If you know of something else written by her outside of an anthology, let me know. Hope she isn't a one book wonder like some other famous story tellers we know.
