Hyper: The Untold Story of Marketing Data

Rate this book
Digital marketing is broken.

Digital marketing used to be straightforward and highly effective. If you knew what you were doing, you could fine-tune your strategy, learn from your efforts, and continually improve your ROI.

Today, everything has changed. Costs are up, and your hands are tied by ad platforms' AI and data privacy regulations. It's like gambling in a casino where the house – big tech – always wins.

But there’s hope.

As the Head of Strategy at a digital consultancy, I was frustrated with this trend. Advising clients to spend more without significantly better results felt wrong. So together with my team, we started experimenting and discovered a way out.

In this book, I share our learnings:
1) The Trap: Why you’re spending more for less. |
2) The Escape Plan: How to achieve exceptional results. |
3) Mindset Shifts: Changes needed for success. |
4) Tech Adaptations: Tools for executing a better ROI strategy. |
5) Future Vision: A world with zero marketing noise. |
6) Privacy Paradox: Understanding data and using it effectively despite regulatory challenges. - -

Take this book and join me in putting digital marketing back into people's hands.

If you asked 15-year-old Attila, “What would you like to become?”, I would’ve said a professional cyclist and bike shop owner. But just before graduation, things changed.

In summer 2007, my father gave me an assignment to launch a webshop. I was studying advanced mathematics and computer science, but the programming language we were learning, Turbo Pascal, was a legacy technology unrelated to web development. At the same time, that year marked my peak in mountain bike racing, with successes in local cups, national championships, and international podiums.
School started in September, and I forgot about the project. Then, one afternoon, my father said, “We've got our first order.” At first, I didn't realize he meant the webstore. Once it sank in, it was like a cartoon light bulb moment: my work was creating business value. For a 17-year-old, this was uniquely inspiring, sparking questions in my mind. Why did they make the order? If someone ordered, why didn’t others before? How can we get more people to buy?

A year later, I co-founded a startup called SiteDoctor, focusing on creating new webshops and improving website conversion rates. It failed within two years but was my launchpad into the digital world. Now, let's jump ahead 17 years to 2023. I am the lead digital strategist and co-founder at Cognitive Creators, a niche consultancy helping global leaders and brands transition into the digital future by creating high-ROI digital business models. This sounds fancy, but you shouldn’t care about fancy words. Instead, focus on the lessons I've learned over 17 years about data and digital growth. I’ve encountered many failures, and my perspective might help you avoid some of the pitfalls I’ve experienced. Use the insights in my writings as your digital launchpad to propel you in a better direction.

It was a pleasure to read „Hyper – The Untold Story of Marketing Data.” I started reading it from a teacher's perspective to share the knowledge with the digital marketing master students. I will recommend the book to my students so they can enjoy it themselves. Moreover, I have realized that this book is useful for everybody with a digital presence online. It is written in a clear and logical manner, and it can be followed easily by everyone. Reading the book, you will understand how your personal data flows on the internet and how it could flow for a better customer experience.

Congratulations!

I enjoy reading a book that makes you feel like you’re listening to a lecture, that teaches you how to think as well as showing practical examples - this is one of those books.

No doubt that ‘data’ has become increasingly important in our world, along with many issues and challenges that comes with it. Most obvious data are quantitative eg. Numbers, figures or graphs but it’s the quality of the data that’s more powerful but requires more understanding and critical thinking.

This book will leave you with some thoughts and insights on how to assess your data qualitatively to reduce marketing noise, or what I call marketing waste, as most companies tend to take the easy route and play with the easy numbers and quantitative game.

Must read for all marketers.

Hyper: The Untold Story of Marketing Data is one of the most insightful and practical books on digital marketing I have ever read. Author Attila Tóth, a seasoned digital strategist at Cognitive Creators, draws from real-world experiences to offer a compelling narrative grounded in proven models and frameworks honed over years of navigating the digital landscape.

What sets this book apart is its ability to transform complex digital data strategies into clear, actionable steps. Tóth doesn't just present theories; he challenges readers to rethink their approach to digital marketing and provides practical frameworks that can be readily applied to achieve tangible results. Whether you're looking to refine your current strategies or completely overhaul your digital marketing efforts, this book will guide you toward a more effective, ROI-driven approach.

I love Hyper for many reasons, but mainly because the author doesn't tell you what to do or how to think. Instead, he offers a framework for various ways to think about data and use it more effectively (you'd be surprised!). He does this with colourful analogies, real-world examples, and stories from his professional past (and possible future?), all in a genuine, honest tone.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who works with data, whether they are decision-makers, marketers, analysts, or others.
