The premise was good, but some of the principles were a little bit of a reach.

Tanya Wright has put together a lovely, upbeat, inspiring book. In it, Wright uses hair as a metaphor and narrative thread to offer 98 "spiritual principles" about life. The notion sounds a bit far-fetched, but she executes it well and it's a quick and engaging read. Wright is a noted actress. (You might know her best from her roles on "Orange is the New Black" as the transgendered inmate's spouse or on "True Blood" as Deputy Kenya.) She is also a writer, producer, director, online series creator and haircare business owner. So, throughout the book , Wright sprinkles in pictures and anecdotes from her long and diverse career as well as quotes from various books, songs and interviews about hair. It's a very cute and thoughtful concept.

The title made me think of the line "I found God in myself/ And I loved her/ I loved her fiercely" from Ntozake Shange's "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf." Indeed, Wright's book does delve into self-care and love and issues much deeper than "just" hair. The book is engaging, funny and insightful. Plus, it is also formatted to be skimmable, so it's easy to go back to a favorite principle or story when the desire arises.

That said, I would have loved to have seen more and bigger in-color pictures of the different hairstyles and just from these snippets of her career, I'd also encourage Wright to pen a full length memoir or advice book about living a fulfilling creative life. She has some jewels to drop.
