The relationship between Milton and his father was one of my favorite parts. There is a quiet respect between them that I really enjoyed. His father's guidance isn't only about becoming a warrior. He teaches Milton about kindness, responsibility and faith. Those lessons seem to become part of the man Milton eventually becomes.

I liked seeing how faith was used to give Milton courage when he was uncertain or afraid. I enjoyed the relationship between Milton and Claret because their wedding isn't treated as just a romantic event. There are family expectations, royal involvement, uncertainty and genuine emotion surrounding it. The interruption of their wedding made me feel the tension of the situation, and when they were finally able to marry, it felt like a payoff rather than just another scene.

What I liked most is that the book isn't only concerned with battles, knights and medieval life. Underneath the historical setting is a story about the values a person chooses to live by. Truth, loyalty, charity, courage and faith come up repeatedly. That gave me more to think about than I expected from a historical story.
