To be a neurosurgeon is something special, and very few achieve that goal. The time you put into medical school and the care you must take if you enter this very specialized area make many shy away from it who have only a casual interest. Those who take the plunge have the opportunity to hold a patient’s life in their very hands, and it’s fascinating to imagine what they must think and feel.

You no longer have to imagine it, though. This book is a collection of essays from a noted neurosurgeon who has put in many years at this highly difficult and demanding profession. The essays range from the uplifting to the sentimental. They involve such topics as leadership, cooperation, and effective communication.

This is a group of essays that a neurosurgeon has written to help people comprehend the need of taking care of our mental health and provide great advice on the subject by sharing examples of how to manage daily stressors, which are a huge part of that problem, showing real-life scenarios. Another big thing for me is how important the idea of self-improvement and reflection this book has helped me develop; I came out feeling more prepared than ever after reading some essays, and that kind of writing is hard to forget! This is definitely a book to have on your nightstand to review from time to time! I really liked it!

Comparison is the Thief of Joy

These books are a collection of essays that will help you work on yourself, like self-reflection. This collection of essays is thought-provoking and has a strong message; even with the shortness of each essay, it brings a lot of ideas to think about. I saw myself reflecting after every essay. Reading one essay/chapter daily will give you enough time to digest the information thoroughly. Being happy, contented, and thankful for what you have is one of the lessons I have learned from this book. Fulfillment brings meaning not only to your life but also to the people around you. The essay is relatable, and you can apply it to your life.

Neurosurgery is an absolutely demanding and complex field that implies many challenges. Throughout this book, we can understand leadership, organization and diverse medical techniques.
One thing I loved about this book is that it's written first hand by a talented author Edward Benzel, who is also a respected neurosurgeon. He explains things in a pretty simple format and this makes the book accessible to any kind of reader.
The content of the book, which is extremely interesting, is divided into different essays. If I had to choose one of them, I would say the one that talks about empathy. I think it is a fundamental virtue that not everyone has, but from which wonderful things emerge.
