Stephen Muscat, a mechanic, and his wife Lisa lived a simple yet fulfilling life on the island of Gozo, where they raised their beloved daughter, Ava. Surrounded by love and cherished by her parents, Ava enjoyed an idyllic childhood before moving to Malta, where she found contentment in the gentle rhythm of life that enveloped her.
However, the tranquillity of a Maltese seaside town is disrupted when a mysterious Canadian man, Mark Wheeler, arrives, asking questions about a local resident. His presence sparks curiosity and idle gossip among the townspeople. Unbeknownst to them, Mark is an heir hunter who has travelled to Malta on a mission to trace the heir to a substantial Canadian fortune left by the recently deceased Florence Hensley.
As Mark delves deeper into his investigation, he begins to unravel a thirty-year-old mystery surrounding the loss of a child, a tragedy that brought immense devastation to a family. Little does Ava know that her life is about to change forever, as the secrets of the past collide with the present, and her connection to the Hensley fortune is revealed.
A mystery, most of which is solved about halfway through, a story of discovering oneself and a love letter to the beautiful islands of Malta. Will make you want a pastry at a seaside table and a tea in a courtyard garden. Genuinely likeable characters, which I enjoy in this age of antiheroes. The main character has a backstory that is alluded to but not explained, which I think is by design as there is a clear setup for a sequel. I loved the village setting and the affection that the actors have for one another. The text could have used an editor, as there were a lot of sentence fragments, periods where a comma should be and some weird misspellings. Whether this is a Kindle glitch or whatever the cause, the story was so good they are worth overlooking. I can’t wait for the next.
The Hensley Legacy is a powerful and engaging story that kept me turning pages from start to finish. The characters are well drawn and compelling, and the way the author weaves together family, history, and emotion feels both thoughtful and meaningful. This book balances drama and heart beautifully, and the story stayed with me long after I finished. Highly recommended for anyone who loves rich, character driven fiction.
