Giving Is Good For You A timely and important book that urges greater responsibility in the face of growing social inequality, by one of Britain's most experienced fundraising directors. Full description
I read this book in preparation for a talk I'll be giving on Middle Class Philanthropist: How anyone can leave a legacy. Nickson's book approaches philanthropy from the traditional perspective; wealthy individuals who choose to give. The book uses numerous profiles in giving to illustrate why we give, roadblocks in giving, etc. The content is primarily limited to the United Kingdom, but was useful to read. I particularly benefited from the section on Community Foundations, and will be referencing information in my upcoming presentation. I also noted a few of Nickson's sources and look forward to reading those in the future. The book's ideas are bounded by the fact they focus on giving in the U.K., and the role of government and tax laws does not translate to my experiences here in the U.S.
