When you step into a genre of fiction that is largely new and unexplored for you, it can be a huge leap of faith. In the case of Their Last Secret Discovered, I took the leap and was rewarded by a book full of action that did not stint on character development either. This can be a rarity in genre fiction. Many writers share the fear that extensive characterization might get in the way of the plot but in this case I feel it added to it. I felt that the characters were drawn from real people and a genuine understanding of humanity at its worst and also at its most noble. They felt real and I was drawn into the story more and more as it unfolded. For me, intimate characterization gave the story more depth, more tension and ultimately made the actions of Carl Hansen’s characters more believable.

I was particularly taken by Elise and Desre. Elise comes to terms with one of the worst possible tragedies that can happen to anyone. She could have fallen apart, but she follows her instincts and works things through - almost on autopilot - until she reaches Desre who helps her achieve some justice and some sense of closure. Mavra on the other hand is no cut out villain; her psychopathic nature is drawn out slowly throughout the novel. As time progresses and she escapes justice time and time again I found myself more and more anxious that she should not elude justice. Her end is a very fitting one indeed. Karma certainly bites her in the butt!

I am also so glad that we are introduced to Elise’s father as a young man. It makes it all the more poignant that Elise believes herself to be an orphan and we feel more involved and invested in the story of Herta too. I was so glad to meet Herta finally, and as m-Eve she is as wise, beautiful and noble as you might expect her to be. She wins over hearts and minds by her compassion and her actions. Finally I am a sucker for happy endings, so although I will not give anything away there were some lovely surprises at the end. Where Declassified ends on a defeat, Discovered ends on a high!

This novel will take you through some amazing twists and turns. It is full of action and, yes, I really do want to see the film! Of course, as a film it would have me on the edge of my seat but this book doesn’t cut corners or deal in stereotypes. It has a slow build up with a terrifying release that makes complete sense. That for me, as a fan of general fiction and literature rather than quickie-read genre tropes and formulae, makes it a very worthwhile read and one I can heartily recommend to people who like their thrillers to have decent development and sound characterization.

Book Two: Discovered of THEIR LAST SECRET takes up right where Book One: Declassified leaves off right in the middle of an assault. What a page turner this two-part series is. As I commented on Book One: Declassified, these two books really read like a movie or thriller movie series, reminds me of the Bourne movies with tight, lean, action packed writing, much like a roller coaster ride.

Book Two is even more intense, definitely is a page turner. You catch your breath before the thrill ride begins again. Don't miss these great books. Have time and tissues. You really can't put it down. I can't wait for more from my new "must read" thriller author, Carl Hansen also here on GR. If you read the author's pages, you're in for another surprise that will bring a big smile to your face!
