I liked it generally as Jane Austen is a terrific writer and has a nice ear for language. However, due to my contemporary perceptions of class, I am not moved by her characters lamentations over social status. With the exception of Fanny Price, all her protagonists are born to elite or near-elite circumstances comparable to the general population and so it is difficult for me to take their class criticisms seriously. Although I do sympathize with the plight of women who were only afforded the opportunity to make their way in the world through marriage (Pride and Prejudice being a fine illustration of the times in this regard), the bourgeois affectations of Jane Austen novels often bore me in their domestic comfort. I guess it's just not my cup of tea.
I love this book. I read it twice. i love how Jane the author words were so described. her feelings to.I got almost all of her books and read them. i read all of the books i have about twice and then i kind of left them in my library area. i want to read the ones i haven't and do a little more with the books she has wrighten.
I finally have read Pride and Prejudice, and I loved it! I have always loved the A&E version of this beloved classic, and I found it so interesting how much the book and this movie version are so similar. Almost word for word. I love all of the characters that Miss Jane Austen creates in this wonderful book!
Had to read this because I just read P.D. James' "Death Comes to Pemberly" I knew the story, but was taken with the dialogues and use of the English language. I found myself referring to the dictionary a couple of times and could not find a definition for Mr. Bennet's admonition to Lizzy to not be "missish." I guessed he meant don't go all missy on me!
The brilliance of Jane Austen shines through. Her use of the English Language of her time makes for a wonderful read. The characters come to life and I always did like a happy ending. A superb classic.
This is one of my absolute favorite books of all times. I've read it 3 or 4 times. I love the smart, confident and honest characters. I would love to go back in time and be Elizabeth Bennet.
