William Gibson was a Tony Award-winning American playwright and novelist. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1938.

Gibson's most famous play is The Miracle Worker (1959), the story of Helen Keller's childhood education, which won him the Tony Award for Best Play after he adapted it from his original 1957 telefilm script. He adapted the work again for the 1962 film version, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay; the same actresses who previously had won Tony Awards for their performances in the stage version, Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, received Academy Awards for the film version as well.

"Kochać to mieć kogoś w sobie, w tak głęboko, dzień po dnku, całymi latami, że dwoje ludzi jednoczy się ciałami, uczuciami, myślami, wspomnieniami... jednoczy się oczami. Kochać to znaczy patrzeć na świat oczami tej drugiej osoby. Ona lubi mosty, więc za każdym razem, kiedy widzę tu most, smutno mi, że jej oczy na niego nie patrzą."

Romantic Drama, 1M 1F. Who the heck classified this as a comedy? It's heartrending! Jerry and Gittel are two people in need, and this play tracks their relationship as it hurts and heals them.

I read this at the beginning of the season, mulled in over the summer, and read it again just now. It's definitely my favourite thing ever but a hard play to swallow.

On my one hand, sort of charming. On the other, not about a heck of a lot.

These types of plays were commonplace in the 50s/60s, but could never be mounted on Broadway today.

Interested to read its musical incarnation soon.

I don't know why this play is listed as a comedy. I found it incredibly sad. Though it might be understandable in the mores of 1960, today I find it unacceptable that the male lead strikes Gittel forcefully with a rolled up newspaper. Totally unnecessary. I was disappointed in the play. Kristi & Abby Tabby
