The unceasing change, the insecurity, and the misery of life make it necessary to find some basis of certainty on which to rest if happiness and peace of mind are to be maintained. All science, philosophy, and religion are some many efforts in search of this permanent basis; all interpretations on the universe, whether from the material or spiritual side, are so many attempts to formulate some unifying principle or principles by which to reconcile the fluctuations and contradictions of life.

Allen was 15 when his father, a businessman, was robbed and murdered. He left school to work full-time in several British manufacturing firms to help support the family. He later married Lily L. Allen and became an executive secretary for a large company. At age 38, inspired by the writings of Leo Tolstoy, he retired from employment. Allen — along with his wife and their daughter, Nohra — moved to a small cottage in Ilfracombe, Devon, England to pursue a simple life of contemplation. There he wrote for nine years, producing 19 works. He also edited and published a magazine, "The Light of Reason".

Allen's books illustrate the use of the power of thought to increase personal capabilities. Although he never achieved great fame or wealth, his works continue to influence people around the world, including the New Thought movement.

Allen's most famous book, As a Man Thinketh, was published in 1902. It is now considered a classic self-help book. Its underlying premise is that noble thoughts make a noble person, while lowly thoughts make a miserable person.

Following his death in 1912, his wife continued publishing the magazine under the name, "The Epoch".

Nature is the Spirit made visible and tangible. The seen is the expressed form and latter of the unseen. Thus, the prophet Isaiah says: "I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things." The prophet Amos expresses the same thing when he says: "Shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hat not done it?"

En av James Allens mest annorlunda böcker och den släpptes först efter att han gått bort. Jag gissar att den var en anledning till att han ville slipa vidare på den först. Den skiljer sig också på det sättet att den riktigt sig både till de som leder/driver ett företag och direkt till arbetaren. Den av Allens böcker som mest liknar en managementbok från 80-talet. Klart läsvärd och med en arbetsfilosofiskt inriktning som är väldigt ovanligt. Men läser man den måste man ändå tänka på att den är skriven för över 100 år sedan.
