Betty's Barge; Adventures Afloat On the Canals of France

Rate this book
The title of this delightful book merely hints at the extended journey inside. Betty's Barge takes us faraway and into a peacefully adventurous life exploring the historic canals of France aboard an antique Dutch motor barge. The book brings to life, in vivid color and charming detail, canal barges and the people, villages, geography and history of the canals, along with the joys and tribulations of living aboard a seventy foot long, sixty year old, floating iron pied-a-terre―while renovating it. A book to be savored anytime you would really rather be somewhere else.
The author has more than thirty years of experience living aboard, overhauling and sailing boats ranging from an ocean going ketch through a Maine lobster boat to...Betty's Barge.

Excellent travel log, dreadful punctuation, poor spelling

Just the book I had looked for, a detailed account of the boat purchase, the problems encountered, the remodeling, then the travels. All lively and entertaining. The punctuation is dreadful, and the spelling poor, mistaking your deserts for desserts, the usual its for it's and complete disregard for french place names.
With a good editor, it would have deserved 5 stars. Probably the editing was done with NUMEROUS bottles of wine, which would explain. This guy may not (?) be an alcoholic, but he sure likes large quantities of French wine, and tipsy bicycle rides...

Not bad, but not the best of barge travel.

A barge travel book with historical content, technical minutia, and doesn't sound like a good time. Little emotional interaction but lots of food commentary, some typos along the way. If anyone is thinking of canal traveling this has good information, but it's not a one of the best in canal travel, Valerie Poore's books are interesting in both technical and adventure.
