Yuna and Uryu are still body-swapped, but Yuna’s bestie Mitsuko suspects something is afoot. But when the body swapping starts to trigger randomly, Uryu’s got a lead on Yuna’s deepest secrets. Also the school festival happens and does anybody around here know how to cook Wagyu beef!?

As I’ve said, I like this series a lot because it might not be the most outstanding manga of all time, but within its genre it does so much more than a dozen other books I could name that never learn the lessons of their predecessors.

Uryu not being a blank pile of wallpaper is one thing I have consistently praised and, yes, he does the noble thing every time, but his attitude, tenacity, and his ability to grow as a person (compare this version of him with the one that rejected the very notion of gods early on) have made him a lot more fun than the zeroes we usually see.

He’s also fairly clever and quickly figures out that he and Yuna are being manipulated to get to know one another better, but rather than just follow the whims of fate he chooses his own way of getting things done, which is very Uryu.

I also liked how Mitsuko goes from being a single joke (she makes dango and her hairstyle is… a dango…) to a single joke with some solid backstory with Yuna. Finding more about their friendship develops both of them so much, including why Yuna is so hard on herself.

Of course, when Uryu gets to the bottom of things he develops a healthy adversarial respect for Yuna that spurs her forward, but watch that first step, Yuna, because it’s pretty easy to start falling when you’re least expecting it. I mean, we knew that was coming, but it was well done.

Another thing I really like about this story is that it has restraint about not having any restraint. Yeah, the poses and the usual jokes about Yae’s chest abound (actually, there’s a pretty funny boob joke in this one, lord help me). But Uryu not acting like a horned out weirdo (nosebleeds are still funny) or flailing comedically is kind of refreshing.

There’s a scene where he and Yuna are body swapped and she’s dressing him, in her body, in her underwear and it’s not half as scandalous as it could be and even the well-timed joke in that scene is pretty well done. Again, play to the crowd, but don’t embarrass yourself doing it.

This whole volume is basically working to bring Yuna into the competition for Uryu’s heart after all that tsundere and it does a fantastic job making her a lot more than just the basic tropes. It interweaves the school festival, the body swapping, the actual performance of ‘The Changelings’ (some excellent editing here), and delivers maximum damage to her poor heart.

And it gives chapters to the other two girls as well, who have their own adventures at the festival, and then ties the whole volume up with a big old ensemble cookout that is just packed with silliness (Uryu’s dramatics over cooking are so, so good) and finishes with one wild little cliffhanger.

I mean, no, this isn’t the most emotionally resonant book I’m reading, but the characterization, the gags, the dramatics, the pacing, and the plotting have really been just killing it lately. It’s happily become something I look forward to seeing show up on my Kindle.

4 stars - this story is doing something manga rarely do, which is get better as they go, and something harem series practically never do, which is hold my attention. The risk is always there for that to no longer be the case, but it’s a risk I’m happily willing to take for now.

I really liked it.

Omicchan has emerged as the MVP of the volume, she really has fit in well with the main cast. Yae is still the best girl. 😏

Loved the last chapter. Seeing every character come and enjoy their time like that was really nice to see.
