As a therapist who is just starting my career, this book is something I can easily picture myself picking up again & again when I am in need of some encouragement. While written like a warm & uplifting letter from a mentor, it provides practical solutions on how to manage feelings of imposter syndrome, as well as ways to stay authentic to yourself. I highly recommend to anyone who is working in a helping profession!
Although the title is “The Heart of Counseling“ I found this book to be very helpful as a pastor as well. Dr. Michelle‘s honesty, vulnerability and expertise show through in every chapter. I especially appreciate the parts about naming my ghosts and how this practice can be so powerful in moving forward to “shed my skin.” what remains is what will make me a better listener, empathizer, and leader. Plus, the cover is absolutely stunning.
As a new counselor, I found myself underlining section and section, thankful for a voice to speak into the overwhelming feeling on imposter syndrome, not enoughness, and fear of getting it wrong. This book feels like Dr. Michelle is in the room with you, remind you to be curious, slow down, that you are enough...not only that, but that your authentic, unique self is needed and valued in the room.
This is an excellent book about the process of being a therapist. I especially liked the permission to be yourself and to be curious. A must read for new therapists, but even for seasoned therapists like myself, it’s a great reminder.
I would read and reread this book even if it wasn't required reading for my program. Dr. Michelle encourages, spurs, believes, and deeply cherishes the work of a beginning counselor. Her heart stretched to hold mine in each chapter -- this is the work of a great counselor.
