There is much to like here in this short volume, especially if one is looking for a quick overview of elected quirky history. Still, what is presented is well enough researched to be historical, yet lacks a historiographic approach. Likewise, the humor history is there, but not always the humor that will evoke more than perhaps a chuckle, and often not that. There is, then, a bit of history, a bit of humor, but not what one might be looking for. Still, it is a book one could thrust into the hands of a high school student and feel good that they are at least learning that humor was not invented so recently as their lifetime. Glad I read it, but would struggle to recommend it to many others beyond young adults and high school students.

Some of the more interesting topics include Flipping the Bird; Mermaids, Monsters and Sirens; How to mail a baby; The Great Stink (London); trying to hang a French monkey; the woman who gave birth to rabbits; the 1938 radio program War of the Worlds; Dad jokes and the Cadaver synod of 897 or how to put a cadaver on trial. All really interesting stuff, some of which I've read in other books.

I've listed to the radio War of the Worlds and I can see how it could have scared some people. This was way before instant news broadcasts and you tube videos so I can see how some people would have believed it was actually happening.

Funny

It was amazing to read that Einstein forgot his own address and needed help getting home. The famous ‘rabbit hunt’ involving Napoleon being attacked by rabbits was hilarious. Or the story of Andrew Jackson’s cussing parrot that had to be removed from his funeral due to its foul language. This is a laugh out loud view of history and its absurd moments. It helps put the famous in perspective and to be humble in the present.
