This quick reads novel is more of a short story, but it still manages to pack in plenty of action. The author's sparse business-like style goes well with the plot – the British army are building a hospital in Afghanistan when it comes under attack by the Taliban. Whilst not gratuitously gory – the book is aimed at teens – it says enough to bring home some of the brutality of war, especially its effects on the civilian population, and it does so without becoming overly emotional. I would recommend this book to those studying politics or history, to give them a more human perspective of the events we usually only see as headlines. It's worth noting that this story is pro-British, so you would need to read another perspective to add balance.
