Rodolfo M. Kohn was born in Argentina, Buenos Aires, and in 1963, when he was 18, emigrated to Israel where he volunteered to join the Israeli Defense Force. This book is based on his story of how a leftist pacific student enrolls in one of the most efficient and hardest armies in the world and quite unintentionally becomes a full fledged soldier and because of 'destiny' takes part in the SIX DAYS WAR in 1967. Although he wants to become a Barman, life has other plans for him. His adventures told in comedic prose, become a drama while he is surrounded by Real life heroes who were born in a very harsh land and are fully adapted to the circumstances. Our main character is an anti-hero who tries hard to get out of the way but cannot avoid to float through the rivers of survival that have guided the People of Israel all through their history. After the War the author goes to Vienna, to study Hotel Management and to become a renowned Hotel General Manager. This, his first book, is for people interested in the Middle East, for people doing their military service and for veterans having served their countries. It is also designed for people who love Peace, adventures and take risks in life. Rodolfo regards himself a citizen of the world.
I really found this to be an intimate and personal account of the author’s time in the Israel Defense Forces. It’s from a regular guy’s perspective and spot on in detail. I served in the IDF about 10 years after this account and it brought so many memories back to the surface.
