This book includes chapters on drawing faces, bodies, and how to use references for your drawing, as well as a chapter about the principles of manga story-telling. The introduction gives practical advice about setting up, including what types of pencils or markers to use, what kind of paper to use or how to draw digitally. There are lots of warm-up exercises to train your motor skills, as well as basic form studies.

This book has everything you need to get started drawing manga. I especially like that this book, unlike many art books, does not have any nudity. There are sections that talk about shaping the human form, but they people are clothed or just outlined in basic shapes. This means the book is suitable for children who are interested in drawing!

Learn to Draw Manga is a tutorial and style guide for beginning artists for drawing anime and manga figures by KritzelPixel. Released 16th July 2024 by Penguin Random House on their Zeitgeist imprint, it's 96 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.

This a fun and accessible tutorial guide aimed at beginners to slightly more advanced readers and usable for all-ages. The author has an engaging and encouraging style of teaching and writes clearly and enthusiastically. I love that she says that the way she saw improvement was simply by practicing and refusing to give up! She says: "Art doesn’t require talent; it only needs to bring you joy".

The book's tutorial chapters include step by step instructions for different characters from beginning rough sketches, step-by-step through refinements to a finished sketch. The chapters build on one another: introduction - faces - bodies - drawing from references - through to the principles of manga. It's a wide ranging surprisingly information rich tutorial primer and includes several styles of anime/manga, including kawaii (cute) manga.

This would make a good choice for public or school library acquisition, home use, or gift giving (perhaps bundled with some basic drawing supplies). It's a very simple and abbreviated guide but there's a lot of good basic information here.

Four and a half stars. Anyone could use the tutorials to make a credible manga style drawing, and her style is so fun and encouraging.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Ever since becoming an illustrator last year, I've been consumed by the urge to create a Manga using characters from our coloring book. I'm on a mission to improve my art skills, and I picked up quite a few tips from this title that I'll now incorporate into future projects.

Beginner Friendly: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
Easy To Read: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Organization: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
Cute: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Style: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Inspiring: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Creating your own Manga: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
Character Development: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Drawing Practice: (Hands, Eyes, Nose, Anatomy, Hair & Clothes) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
References: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The artist's style is undeniably cute and inspiring! It's super clever how the book represents a Manga while simultaneously teaching how to draw them too!

Kritzelpixel shares a couple of great pages with creative visuals on creating your own Manga panels, this was my favorite part. They discuss the importance of spacing and chat bubbles, providing visual examples of each. This section is especially valuable for those looking to enhance their storytelling skills.

The artist encourages readers to develop their own style, offering 60 templates of her own characters to copy and practice with. This is a fantastic way for aspiring Manga artists to experiment and hone their skills!

Overall, the book is a delightful resource for anyone interested in Manga creation. While it may not be the most beginner-friendly in terms of creating your own Manga, it excels in offering inspiration, style development, and drawing practice. Whether you're a seasoned illustrator or just starting, this book provides valuable insights to spark your creativity.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This in no way impacted my opinions.

I have done a lot of drawing in my life and taken many classes devoted to drawing. I am always looking for new techniques and styles of drawing to learn and manga has had me intrigued for the last couple years. It is a different style than I am used to so decided to get some books to learn how to do it. I came across this book and decided it was the one I wanted to start with to see if I liked this type of drawing. It came shortly after I ordered it. I went right in from the start of this book and was quickly having fun with this type of drawing. I had all my pencils and drawing equipment out and ready to go. In a couple days I had several drawings done that I was very pleased with. I was excited to see the outcome of my work and have been focusing time on doing more drawing. Once I got through the book, I started using these techniques of drawing manga to create on my own. Its very different from drawings I usually do which is very realistic. For anyone who likes manga or wants to learn how to draw manga I suggest this book. It has page after page of step to get you used to drawing manga in a simple way for almost any age. I am glad to have it in my drawing book library.
