Being included in The Southern Poetry Anthology, Volume III: Contemporary Appalachia (2nd Edition) was both an honor and a milestone in my poetic journey. This collection stands as a vibrant testament to the depth, diversity, and enduring voice of contemporary Appalachian writers. To be in dialogue with peers whose work reflects the region’s landscapes, histories, and lived realities affirmed my belief that Appalachian poetry is not peripheral—it is essential, rigorous, and resonant.
This anthology, guided by the editorial vision of William Wright, J. Bruce Fuller, Paul Ruffin, and featuring contributions from poets like Jesse Graves, holds itself to a high standard of craft and insight. Its solid reception speaks to its impact; it’s a collection that invites readers into the region’s complexities with clarity, heart, and urgency. The work assembled here is both rooted and restless—grounded in place, yet aware of the wider world that intersects with Appalachian experience.
To be part of this volume means standing within a lineage of voices that refuse stereotype and demand attention. It means contributing to a conversation that widens perceptions of Appalachia, celebrating its contradictions, its wisdom, and its fierce beauty.
