Now that I know that the production was directed by the director of "Hair," the production style makes more sense to me. The phantasmagoria that the author was going for, was very much of a piece for theater audiences from the late sixties through the mid-seventies. However, it makes for a difficult read and I can't imagine how it would be staged today.
The Fosse film version of the play has more structure and is more engaging for me.
Forget about the Dustin Hoffman bomb movie, read the play or go see it if you can. It's like one big crazy Lenny Bruce stream of consciousness rap, with the Lone Ranger, Christ and Moses, and his "To Is A Preposition" routine. When I saw the play in 1972 Sandy Baron played Lenny at the Aquarius Theatre. Yeah!
