In His Corner

Rate this book
Hayden Quinn’s worked his ass off to turn his restaurant into the thriving business it is today. Too hard to risk it all by letting an ex-con through his door. Yet, there Levi is. Six feet of attitude. Six feet of pure temptation.

No one warned Levi that getting out of prison would only be the start of his problems. He doesn’t need a boss who looks down his nose at him. Except behind that, there’s a heat. A heat that Levi can’t help responding to.

Together they burn hot, forging something that could be more than just lust. When Levi’s past comes knocking though, has he really got someone in his corner, or is he just as alone as ever?

In His Corner is a steamy hurt/comfort MM romance featuring a hot-tempered chef who needs his life shaking up a bit and a wounded character who might have a chip on his shoulder a mile wide, but deep down just wants someone to love him. When their fragile connection is put to the test, will their relationship endure, or will everything they’ve built crumble away to nothing?

I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

🔪This story is an interesting one to review for me. because even though Hayden was NOT a likeable character, i still really dug him lol! i'm a fan of the wide world of hot kitchens and short tempers, assholes in aprons and no fucks to give. jamie oliver is my unicorn...but i haven't cooked with him nor have i caught a bts on his flavour of tantrum, and i refuse to step to it because some dreams are meant to be protected lol! in any case, Hayden was super snarly but that worked for me.

precious bae Levi had me a little less sure though, if i'm being honest.

🍽️Levi's twenty-three and finally free, he's done time for his crimes, and this story was his turning over a new leaf. I think my niggle is that he did very little turning himself. and while i most assuredly support the fairy godmother flex of Darien his PO, Levi's well-intentioned light bearer did all the heavy lifting when it came to his characterization, and i was left wanting more from him than the narrative actually supported.

🔪To be fair this did a 180 from a spicy start to a cutesy romance so i totally get it, but I think i personally just wanted a bit more than sweet fluff from HL Day because i know that she can BRING. IT. But that's just me.

🍽️So yeah, Levi's adorable, but also scary. Everyone's grabbing their purses...and their hearts. Why? Because he's gorgeous in a leather jacket, but also looks great in waiter blacks.

🍴He's hard on the outside AND chewy on the inside. Anxiety is real for the newly rehabilitated.

🔪He's aloof, but all heart deep down. Power dynamics mean nothing...until they mean everything to him.

🥄Levi's a granny boy (we stan) and a lone ranger...with quite a few friends under a week! he fucks on the fly but also wants to date. Bless.

🍽️he's a reader and a smart guy, but he's made some poor life choices in the past, and ngl some of his present didn't look that sharp for the amount of gassing up his PO did. But he's 23 and i get it. Levi was a wonderful bundle of...everything...in one smokin hawt, ripped as fk, bad boy but not quite package.

🔪what it comes down to is that, ultimately, Levi's really just in this to be fawned over. By everyone. and while that's cute and everything, and ignoring the handful of instances of proactivity, he's basically in this receiving energy from start to end. he gave borderline pillow princess/cinderfella vibes, and while there's nothing intrinsically wrong with that, i just could not help wanting a story with an emotional layer of soft ex-con going through it yk.

🍽️regardless, this was still a sweet and simple offering from one of my favourite authors, and i am definitely looking forward to everything still to come from HL Day. because at the very least, she's great for a story AND she makes me think about character like no one else! and that's pretty awesome in my book!

An ex-con with a tough guy attitude, a chef with too many prejudices. Lust brings them together, but will Levi’s past tear them apart?
Or will he finally have someone…in his corner?

I don’t know exactly how I feel about this one. Some things I enjoyed while others I was a bit more meh about.
Let’s start with the positives.

I mostly liked the middle portion. I liked seeing them connect, for their relationship to not be just about the sex. I really loved when Hayden took care of Levi, when he went from being a bit of an ass to sweet and thoughtful and caring.
The office/desk spice was fire and sexy. I wanted more of that.

On the flip side, after those beginning lust-crazed moments, the smut does fade unfortunately. Once they start deepening their relationship, we only get snippets and closed doors. Which I know is a bit ironic. I ask for more emotional connection and for it to not be just sexsexsex, but when I get it I want the sex again.
I don’t know what I want either, man.

I also didn’t really care for Hayden in the beginning. He’s really a dick for a bit there, and I don’t think there was enough/any grovel to make up for it.

It was a nice little distraction, very sexy at the start and sweet in the end. I enjoyed the writing style and the easy breezy flow of the story, but I just didn’t feel Hayden and Levi’s love.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

CW and tropes (spoilers):
- Ex-con MC
- Chef MC
- Boss vs employee
- Strict top/bottom
- Brief rimming
- Office sex

Tropes: boss/employee, hurt/comfort
Feels: 2.5/5
Steam*: 2.5/5
Kinks: dirty talk
Angst: low
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: past crimes, parolee, bad/absent parents, ill grandma, basically sexual harassment in the workplace

Levi is 23 and just got out of prison where he was doing a 2-year sentence for stealing cars. He's gay. He's close to his grandma who raised him, she's ill and in a care home because she can't live on her own. Post prison, his parole officer Darien gets him a job at Darien's brother Hayden's restaurant.

Hayden's age isn't specified but he must be around 30 give or take a few years. He's a successful chef who owns his own restaurant. He's a bit of a Gordon Ramsay, in that he's a real a****** and his staff respect but fear him. He's gay but doesn't have time for relationships, he hasn't prioritized them he's put his career first. Hayden is reluctant to hire Levi but once he meets he's very attracted to him.

This book is probably three or 3.5 stars. Decent that it's a low angst story that gets to a happy ending and a good place. But overall it wasn't a huge fan. I didn't like Hayden for a good hunk of the book, up until Levi got pneumonia he was a real a******. He was a jerk to Levi, he came off as a big sexual harasser and like he was just using him for sex. He didn't express any desire to date him, but maybe the author just did a poor job letting us in to see Hayden's thoughts and feelings? Hayden was good to Levi after the pneumonia incident, and their relationship really got positive after that point. But I didn't really believe the love, it didn't really feel organic.

Various things that bothered me:
- when they had their first hook up, it felt like Levi's attraction to Hayden came out of nowhere. I don't think the author showed us enough of Levi's attraction to Hayden before that moment.
- I'm not a huge fan of unbalanced power dynamics, and Hayden definitely held all the power. Hayden came off as a jerk and a sexual harasser until the pneumonia thing.
- I know the author said in the notes at the beginning that this wasn't you know an accurate representation of the legal system, but I felt like Levi should be paying restitution and in debt for at minimum totaling the Porsche that he was trying to steal.
- I saw it coming from a mile away what was going to go down with David. And I didn't really like how Levi handled it. He should have been talking to someone.

Some notable moments:

"“He said that you would act like a dick, but that deep down, you weren’t.” The truth. It disappointed me. I needed ammunition to help me look past his pleasing physical attributes, not him being straight with me. “He’s wrong,” I said. A slight frown. “About which part?” “The deep down part.” Levi gave a slow nod. “Always a dick. Noted.”"

"It was awkward, his trousers and pants still tangled around his ankles and the height of my desk not ideal for fucking, which made me want to laugh once I realized it and vow to do better in the future. Can I help you, sir? What is it you’re looking for? Ample drawer space? Built in ports? Spacious surface area? No, none of that. I just need one where if I have someone bent over it, they’re at the optimal height for fucking."

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This was a great book! I was hesitant because this is not a slow burn and I wasn’t sure if I’d like it once the steam started but I am very happy to say that it worked out beautifully and I should know by now to trust Day because I’ve loved so many of her books.

The romance that starts between Levi and Hayden shouldn’t work, if you were on the outside looking in you would never pair these two together. Hayden is a workaholic who only gives all his time and attention to his restaurant. He seems to be very rigid and hard to get to know. He runs his restaurant with an almost iron fist. Levi is an ex-con who has a hard exterior and is angry at himself for getting caught up in stealing cars and spending time in jail. He’s extremely smart but tries to cover that up. He wants to keep his head down and be a better caretaker for his grandmother.

I think my favorite character was Darien, who is Levi’s parole officer but also Hayden’s brother. He was so upbeat and caring but also tough and intuitive. I would love a book for him! (Hint, Hint)

What starts off as only sex between Levi and Hayden changes quickly. These men are a lot more alike than they’d ever first admit. Hayden was so patient and caring, I don’t think many people would be this way, especially for someone they just recently met. I was impressed by his character.

This was a quick read that flowed smoothly. There was a little bit of angst but it’s not over the top. This may be the hottest book by this author I’ve read so far. I really loved the sparks that flew between Levi and Hayden. I still would have liked a bit more time spent outside the bedroom but we do get a good amount that makes the relationship believable even though it unfolded quickly.

I received and ARC from the author

Levi has just gotten out of prison and his parole officer, Darien, convinces his brother Hayden to hire Levi at his restaurant. Levi has no one to help him, no family except his grandma, and he has built barriers to protect himself because he believes no one will trust and ex con. At first, I wanted to throttle Hayden. He is a dislikeable character, judgy and unkind to Levi, even when he is attracted to him. Levi made me hurt a bit, I wanted him to find someone to care for him and to give him a chance. They started a sexual relationship, which was a bit sudden for me. From there, they become more than just lovers and we see Hayden change from judgy to being there for Levi through thick and thin. And I so loved that for my poor bb Levi. But his past is just trying to get in the way of his happiness. I kind of expected what the issue would be, and how he would react. It was wholesome how Hayden managed everything and it was exactly what Levi needed.
It wasn't overly spicy, but it has some smexy moments I enjoyed.
Overall there was some spark missing, but the hurt/comfort and 180° change in Hayden made the read with it.

In His Corner is a low-angst contemporary romance about a grumpy chef and the ex-con who goes to work at his restaurant. It’s well-written and steamy, and I like the author’s voice and style, but the romance is rushed and lacks a certain spark.

Top chef Hayden Quinn has worked hard every hour of every day to turn his restaurant into a thriving business and he runs his kitchen with an iron hand. He’s tough, abrasive and doesn’t suffer fools, and his staff respect and fear him in equal measure. His brother Darien is a probation officer, and when he asks Hayden to take on one of his new parolees, Hayden’s immediate instinct is to say no. He’s put absolutely everything he is into the business, and the last thing he needs is some ex-con around screwing it all up, but ends up agreeing to take the guy on. He’ll just get rid of him at the first opportunity.

Levi Gutierrez is twenty-three and served two years in prison for stealing cars. Now he’s out, he’s determined to keep his nose clean and stay out of trouble so that he can be there for his elderly grandmother, who had to move into a nursing home while he was inside. Levi arrives at the posh restaurant to start the job his parole officer has set him up with, and while the boss is as much of an arsehole as his brother had said he’d be, Levi gets to work and tries not to attract too much attention.

Except… he does. Attract attention, that is. The minute Hayden sets eyes on Levi he knows he’s going to be trouble with a capital T, his dark curls, handsome face and long, lean body waking up Hayden’s long-dormant libido in no uncertain terms. Levi’s done time and Hayden doesn’t trust him not to do something that will get him sent back inside, but his body doesn’t care about any of that, or that he’s an employee. He’ll have to settle for lusting after the bad boy like a bad cliché.

A couple of weeks later, Levi and Hayden start hooking-up on the regular despite their employer/employee status. The sex is hot and satisfying; it’s been a long time for both of them and Hayden’s office walls and desk see more action in the following few weeks than they ever have. But after few more weeks, Levi realises he’s not okay with being merely a convenient place for his boss to stick his dick when he feels the urge. He’s not asking for a trip down the aisle, but is a bit of conversation and having Hayden actually take an interest in him as a person too much to ask?

I confess that I didn’t like Hayden much for the first third of the book. It makes sense that he’d be protective of his business, but he’s so prejudiced against Levi because of his past and treats him like crap, even after they start having sex. And herein lies a bigger problem – while Levi initiates their first sexual encounter, there’s a massive power imbalance which isn’t really addressed, and I also found it difficult to believe that Levi would risk his job and his future just for the sake of a quick fuck. This isn’t helped by the fact that it feels as though Levi’s attraction to Hayden comes out of nowhere, because there’s no inkling of that attraction before they have sex. Sure, Levi thinks Hayden is hot, but that’s all we get on the page.

Thankfully, things start to change when the hurt/comfort aspect of the story kicks in, allowing Hayden to show a more caring side, to own up to his mistakes and try to do better by Levi. But his change of heart happens so fast – one minute he’s adamant he’s not interested in anything other than sex with Levi, the next he’s looking after him when he’s sick and talking about their being together for real. I liked that he’s big enough to own up to his mistakes and admit that he wants Levi for more than his body, and their relationship does take a much more positive turn from here on in – I just felt that something was missing, that their connection wasn’t quite there yet. And then Levi’s past comes calling and it’s going to take a real leap of faith on Hayden’s part if they’re going to make it as a couple.

I enjoyed the book for the most part. I liked the brotherly banter between Hayden and Darien and I liked seeing the development of the connection between Hayden and Levi, but I can’t deny that they feel somewhat underdeveloped as characters, and Hayden’s 180 happens very (too) quickly. And the threat posed when Levi’s past rears its ugly head is telegraphed a mile off. It’s a hard one for me to rate, because the similarities between it and Garrett Leigh’s Redemption  (which I reviewed earlier this year) are very obvious, and sadly, In His Corner suffers by the comparison.

I struggled to assign a final grade, because while I’m sure that this novel will appeal to those looking for a very sexy (it’s probably the steamiest book I’ve ready by this author so far), mostly angst-free contemporary romance, I’d have liked more depth to the characters and relationship. I really enjoy H.L. Day’s work and will certainly be keeping an eye out for whatever she writes next, but In His Corner didn’t work for me quite as well as I’d hoped.

A fun hurt comfort read right on the edge of being angsty yet isn't. Hayden & Levi do not understand each other, so they tend to be oil and water with undeniable chemistry. Hayden makes the mistake of treating him as his past shows and not a real person. When Levi is needed, Hayden immediately steps up and helps him on his feet to actually have a chance on the outside. Hayden has top-tier dirty talk that, yeah, just well done. Their chemistry was there, and you could feel the depth of their connection as it grew and Levi let Hayden in. Wish Levi would have handled certain incidents better, or there was more to it. Like you felt the build-up for something, and it just didn't hit as hard as you were anticipating. So if you're looking for low angst with an edge, this will be the perfect read for you.

🔥❤️ A great start to the book which straight away it got me glued into the story.
I loved the brotherly love banter the brothers have at the beginning.
Hayden, 29 years was the owner of his successful restaurant which he worked hard for.
His brother was a parole officer who bribes him into taking on one of his clients, despite Hayden always saying no in the past.
Levi, 23, and was getting on with life now free but needed to be near his Gran.

I knew I would love this book as it reminded me of a book of an ex-con's romance by a different author which I also loved.
This was a fast flowing story with some hot chemistry buzzing between them. But there’s a few bumps along the way which resulted in some hurt feelings and few other things as scenes played out.

Levi’s past comes back which he does his best to find a solution that doesn't get him back behind bars. Levi and Hayden are hot together with sexy scenes and I’m glad H wakes up to want more as scenes leads them in the right direction.
A good ending to the book with them getting their HEA. I loved Levi’s second chance at life in this romance. Dual povs included.

I received an GRR advance reader copy and this is my honest thoughts.

I'll do a full review on the blog but I wanted to say how delightfully surprised I was at how quickly I became invested in this book and these MCs.
I don't like shows or books about food or restaurants of chefs or cooking yet I bought this because I rather like the author's writing and I hoped this might be less about food and more about the characters. It probably was like that and yet the restaurant forms the backdrop of Levi's and Hayden's story and romance.
Hayden is prickly and self-absorbed for a smaller part of the book, chef after all, but he grew on me and became a decent human. I absolutely loved him. He had sooo much growth throughout. That Levi was learning how to be in the world again after two years in prison was well written and I felt a great deal for him. I'm so happy for him.
I enjoyed the hell out of this one.

3,5 stars for a sweet romance with a spicy start

This was an interesting read, not only because of the characters but also due to the flow of the book.

So first, the characters:
Hayden is a chef in his restaurant, and truth be told, mostly a dick. Listening to some of my friends who work in restaurant kitchens, this seems to be a normal thing
But, he also has his good traits and therefore, I really liked him.

Levi was similar in character to Hayden. Very hard on the outside, but he has a big heart.

Darian, who is a main side character, was a bit more difficult for me ... he is important for the story, but I could find it in me to really like him.
Maybe he gets his own book, and that will change my mind 🤔

The story was sweet and fluffy in parts and spicy in other parts, and they talked a lot, which I always appreciate
Also, I loved how the relationship developed, which was really well done

But, and there is always a but, isn't it 🙄 ... some actions of our MCs, which were important for the story development, just didn't fit properly 🤔
But maybe that is a me thing

So, if you are looking for spicy swe, this could be ir

Predictable. Would be good to see an ex-con story that wasn't always about the ex-con getting drawn back into crime. I don't say that would be realistic (sadly), but, structurally, a book has to be pretty exceptional to stand out above the well-worn groove.

This book was fantastic! It was my first from H.L. Day and I’ll definitely be checking her other books.

The romance between Levi and Hayden is one that, from the outside, seems unlikely. Hayden, a successful chef and restaurant owner, meets Levi through his brother. Recently released from prison and on parole, Levi desperately needs a job to restart his life. Despite his initial misgivings, labelling Levi as "Danger with a capital D." Hayden, influenced by his brother Darien, decides to give Levi a chance.

I loved Darien, who was not only Hayden’s brother but also Levi’s parole officer. He struck the perfect balance between being upbeat and caring, yet tough and intuitive. I’d love to see a book featuring him!

What begins merely as an instant physical connection between Levi and Hayden quickly evolves. Despite their initial reservations, they discover they are more alike than they first thought. Hayden's patience and care for Levi, particularly so early in their relationship, was just beautiful. Whilst their attraction was instant, they found that a relationship takes time, understanding, and acceptance from both sides. The narrative beautifully explores their journey of self-discovery and mutual concessions, leading to a fulfilling conclusion.

This book was a quick read that flowed seamlessly. There's a touch of angst, but nothing overwhelming. The sparks between Levi and Hayden were palpable, and while I wished for more scenes outside the bedroom, there was enough development to make their rapidly evolving relationship believable.

In His Corner isn’t just about romance; it’s a profound narrative on second chances and the importance of giving people the benefit of the doubt. The eloquent writing, vibrant character dynamics, and the palpable passion make this book a compelling read.

Expect a page-turner filled with powerful writing, dynamic interactions, and heartfelt romance. Prepare for charming characters, just the right amount of suspense, and a story that captures the essence of love and trust.

I read both of the books in this mini series. They each ran along the same lines of the plot and the characters carried over from one book into the other.
Set in London, a caring parole officer sets up one of his recently released parolees with a job at his brother's restaurant, with just a minimum of arm twisting of the brother.
Hot Levi has a closed off attitude and shows hardly any emotion. He is wary of this second chance kitchen job and wary of the hot head chef. The kitchen is noisy, fast paced, and chef and restaurant owner, Hayden, is amazed at his attraction for Levi after his initial wariness at having an ex-con in his kitchen.
I was actually surprised when Levi walks into Hayden's office for a meeting amid the work day and Hayden grabs him and lays one on him. I didn't see it coming. The writing just had Hayden thinking Levi was attractive and Levi noticing that Hayden watched him. It was a hot scene with desk sex with the busy kitchen outside the unlocked office door.
I wasn't keen on the off page sex mentioned after this as, 'We had been having sex for two weeks in Hayden's office.' Why the off page? I'm here for the sex and the romance, not for the kitchen work and the parole officer brother getting suspicious. The sex helps to build the relationship with aftercare and conversation. The book was well written, but, to be honest, there was something lacking in the writing. Maybe, passion? This is a dual MC POV. There is nice hurt comfort and the romance is nice, too. I just didn't get carried away from this one.

Absolutely brilliant! I felt all warm and fuzzy with this story, not forgetting the humour I expect from this author. It's a story of second chances and stitching wounds. I love a grumpy character and in this book we get two. Hayden is a hot grumpy chef, who doesn't have time for a private life. However, he is close to his brother, who asks for a huge favour for one of his parolees. Levi, is fresh out of prison, very guarded, almost souless from how much prison has taken from him. All he has is his gramdma. Of course, two men, with each with their own reasons for their hardness, they are either going to repel or attract. They are electric together, the secret office meetings are extra hot. Underneath the hardness, there is always a caramel centre and Hayden's centre was so sweet and caring. Hot dirty talk, everything is just steamy, frantic and amazing; until it isn't. There is some angst throughout, and a blip that jeopardises everything. Levi, has been on his own for so long, he has no concept of how strong love is and Hayden's is strong enough for both of them. I loved this story and I adore both MC's. The epilogue was perfect, a real happy ever after. This is a little gem of a book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A tried and tested trope, but sometimes all I want is a nice easy fluffy read and this definitely falls into this category.

We’re introduced to ex-con Levi and the hot-headed chef Hayden. Levi wears his fear of abandonment and belief that he’s not good enough like amour; scowls and cocky smirks are in abundance and Hayden mimics Gordon Ramsey with his explosive temper and love of the f-bomb. These characters are flawed but for me that’s what makes them feel realistic.

The two characters are introduced when Hayden’s brother (Levi’s Parole Officer) sets him up with a job in Hayden’s restaurant.

There is no slow burn for these two. Within days of meeting they’re ripping each other clothes off in the office, but it’s only when Levi falls ill do these two deepen their connection, and Levi works to overcome his past to believe he is an equal to Hayden.

Now, why did I not rate this higher? Pacing….this story felt rushed, it hit all the story and character arcs I was expecting but it was missing the bits in between - the piece that helps each change in direction feel organic, instead it lurched from one plot point to the next and in doing so lost the drama that the author was going for.

Loved it 😍

Levi and Hayden don’t really start off on the right foot. Hayden is very sceptical of taking on an ex convict at his restaurant and Levi just wants to keep his head down and concentrate on his new start in life, humble as it is. Life throws them for a loop though as they both fight against the immediate mutual attraction between them.
They can’t ignore it and give into the sizzling chemistry leading to some very heated moments. As they get to know one another better the layers they both hide behind peel away to reveal a genuine loving connection between them and also exposes the truly wonderful men that they are. Levi’s past does come back to haunt him causing him some angst but nothing that can the derail the HEA he and Hayden strive for.
I loved this very enjoyable and engaging read which kept me turning the pages and left me with a very happy heart at the end.

"No matter what happens no matter what you do. I'm in your corner when you feel blue… and your life is a mess. I'm in your corner try to give you the best…” ~ Cuby & The Blizzards (I’m in Your Corner)

Hayden Quinn, of ‘In His Corner’ by H.L. Day, has built a successful restaurant business by working so hard that he neglected himself. Hayden thought he would be fine if he could make his restaurant run well, but he was wrong. When his brother, Darien, a parole officer, talks him into hiring his latest parolee, Levi, Darien thinks it is the worst idea ever conceived. He does not know that it is the best decision ever.

Levi Guiterrez knew he should never have gotten mixed up with David and his gang, but when he got caught, Levi thought he would at least have helped him instead of deserting him. Everyone had seen it coming, except his grandmother. She's the only one he loves and trusts.

Upon first seeing Levi, Hayden assumes his first impression is correct, that Levi will be nothing but trouble. Yet, he promised his brother that he would give Levi a chance. Initially, Hayden and some of his other employees closely watch Levi, but they soon see he is a hard worker.

Hayden's attraction to Levi angers him. He doesn't need anyone, especially not an ex-con, but his feelings persist. Since Levi's desire matches his, it finally bursts into a steamy, sensual encounter that goes on behind closed doors.

Levi is happy that he and Hayden are having sex but isn't pleased that Hayden wants to keep it a secret. Levi has had enough of being used and gives him an ultimatum: either go public or leave him alone.

'In His Corner' is about getting a second chance and making the most of it. I sympathized with Levi the most; Hayden, it took longer because he was such a jerk to his employees, but he grew on me when he finally dealt with his issues. Levi's grandmother was a hoot. Thanks, H.L., for the tale of two men who found happiness.

Hayden and Levi: When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
Tags: opposites attract, contemporary, page-turner, hot, excellent writing, compelling, no cliffhanger.
I loved this book: the writing, the narrative, the story, and the characters. It is a beautiful, riveting, and moving tale about the importance of giving people the benefit of the doubt and taking second chances when offered.
Hayden is a successful chef, grouchy workaholic and restaurant owner who met Levi through his brother. Levi has just been released from prison on parole and is in desperate need of a job and a chance to put his life back on track. Under pressure from his brother, Hayden recruits Levi, despite his reservations and opinion that Levi is "Danger with a capital D. Trouble with a capital T."
The attraction between Hayden and Levi was instantaneous; however, it took a lot of time, effort, self-discovery, and acceptance from both of them to reach their happy ending.
Though the plot is straightforward, the masterful writing and passionate, captivating dynamics between the main characters make this book irresistible. Because of profound insight into Hayden and Levi's feelings, I related to them on a deep emotional level, and it was impossible to resist falling in love with them. Following Levi and Hayden on their journey, discovering and overcoming their limits and fears, and giving each other what they needed most: love and trust, was a beautiful, moving, and riveting experience.
What to expect: a page-turner, excellent and eloquent writing, exciting, dynamic, profound, and vibrant narrative; charming and lovable characters; just enough angst and suspense; passion and love.
What not to expect: dark drama, complex and difficult issues, action, and mystery.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book. This review is an independent and genuine reflection of my thoughts.

This was the first book I read by this author, and I must say I was so happy to give it a try. H. L. provided a likable cast of characters and a very solid story.

Hayden is a chef who is prickly on the outside and, as far as his workers think, also prickly on the inside. His younger brother, Darien, knows the real Hayden. Despite his bluster, there is a kind man underneath the chef’s whites. Darien’s request for help has Hayden in a mini meltdown. Could he take one of his newest parolees to work at his restaurant? He finally caves but has very low expectations for this poor man.

Levi is out of jail and trying to assimilate back into society. His goal is to leave his old ways of life behind and forge a future where he can take care of his beloved grandmother. He fell into the wrong crowd as a teen and now wants nothing more to do with that life. His parole officer, Darien, finds him a job, and after a short time as an assistant dealing with Hayden’s attitude, jail is starting to look appealing.

I enjoyed watching Hayden soften and realize he made a snap judgment with Levi. At first, I deeply disliked Hayden and was so happy to see he had redeeming qualities. Levi has never felt cared for by anyone but his grandmother, so his feelings for the spicy chef are new and complex.

The past wants to put a wedge between the two men as they seek footing in their growing relationship. I did enjoy this book a great deal but felt Hayden fell rather quickly, and obstacles were resolved with more ease than I expected.

All in all, this was a book that I would definitely recommend and revisit. Happy reading.

Great book with MC's who at first dislike each other. Hayden Quinn doesn't have time for relationship s due to all his energies going to his restaurant. His brother, Darien, who is a parole officer, begs Hayden to take a new parolee as a hire since the first job fell threw. Hayden reluctantly agrees, and when he meets Levi, all he can think is that Levi is pure trouble. Levi has just been paroled after 2 years in prison for car theft. He is determined to not make the same mistakes and to suck it up at the job even though he can tell that Hayden doesn't really want him there. He wants to be able to make enough money to get his grandmother, who raised him, out of the nursing home. Hayden is attracted to Level and vice versa even though they both know it is a bad idea to get involved. Their relationship soon turns physical until Levis is tired of being treated like a object. When he doesn't show up to work for 3 days in a row, Hayden goes searching for him and finds him burning up with fever and is appalled at the conditions he is living in. Hayden takes him home and nurses Levi back to health which is when their relationship turns into something more with feelings for each other. Levi has never been happier until a person from his past shows up and threatens everything he holds dear Levi has to make a choice and hope that Hayden forgives him. This book is about finding something or someone to focus on besides work and about seconds chances. It shows that people can learn from their mistakes and can become productive members of society again if given the chance.

Uplifting romance, full of hope.

I wouldn't expect anything less than an excellent read from HL Day, and this didn't let me down. Lovely story and well written characters guaranteed. There's a little darkness in this one, but on the whole it's an uplifting story full of hope.
Levi is an ex con. He ran with the wrong crowd and paid the price. All he wants now is to move on and just spend time with his grandma. I immediately fell in love with Levi, he oozes vulnerablity, wanting to be accepted, but also afraid of rejection. He thinks because of his past, he isn't good enough for anything or anyone. He has a massive, 'I need a hug' vibe, and I immediately fell in love with him...come to Mama baby 😍
Hartley, on the other hand, is somewhat of a d*ck at times, bad tempered bullies his employees (think Gordon Ramsay😠). He and Levi have an undeniable, if unwanted, connection from the get-go, both having a way of getting under each other's skin. Ultimately though, I did come to respect Hartley, the way in which he gave himself over to Levi when they accepted their attraction was just beautiful. I also loved how Hartley dealt with the situation when Levi's past history caught up with him.
Throughout the story we see Levi go from a struggling ex con to someone we are cheering for, and someone who is loved. Hartley also loosens up, and comes to realise that you shouldn't judge someone, or something based only on what you see on the outside, or only on what you perceive without knowing the full situation. I really enjoyed the whole story, the epilogue is joyous, and I'd love Darien 's story (big hint), pretty please 😉

This was the first read by this author for me. In His Corner is the story of Levi and Hayden. Levi has just gotten out of prison on parole. Hayden is the owner of a restaurant. Levi's PO is Hayden's brother Darien. After the job Darien secured for Levi falls through, he asks Hayden to let him work at his restaurant. Hayden is extremely against this idea, but eventually caves.

I'll be frank, I didn't like Hayden in the beginning of this. He seemed very cold, at times mean, but this part of his character is described later as being the result of him constantly working and not taking time for himself or to cultivate relationships.

Levi on the other hand was the biggest sweetheart to me. He's young, only 23 and he seems to truly want to do better for himself and his grandma. He's tough and a hard worker and doesn't want to place any burden on anyone.

I think my biggest critique of this story is how fast we went from 0 to 100. Their intimate encounters began pretty quickly, but they were firmly in the hookup phase for awhile, a place where (in my opinion), Hayden almost felt ashamed of Levi.. and then boom, they were in a relationship and Hayden's supposed reservations were totally gone. I felt like we were missing their relationship developing, it just all of a sudden was.

Overall, I truly enjoyed this story. It was well written, and the spice was great.. and that cover?!! Gorgeous!!

Hayden isn't all too keen on helping his brother out by employing Levi, one of his brother's parolees, in his kitchen. However, once he meets Levi, he's drawn to the younger man and they start hooking up, when Levi asks for more, Hayden says no. When Levi needs Hayden, though, Hayden steps up and becomes the kind of man Levi needs and more. However, the past has a way to come back and Levi's seems to be catching up with him, even when he tries to avoid it.

I wasn't too sure what to think about Hayden at first, he was a Gordon Ramsay kind of chef in his kitchen, keeping a very tight rein on his employees, and to say he was prickly is putting it lightly. Once he realizes he wants more with Levi, his protective streak came out and I loved seeing a new side of him. I liked Levi, despite him making some not-so-good decisions throughout the story, he's a good man. I absolutely loved him with his grandma. I also liked him and Hayden together, they had chemistry and were great together.

I was very happy we got some closure regarding Levi's pesky past. And I really hope we'll get to read a HEA for Darien in the series, as well.

Overall, an engaging, feel-good story with some light angst, that I have no trouble recommending.

I love a newly released prisoner MC in my romance reads… there is just something about the vulnerability in a big guy rebuilding his life and adapting to a new world while having nothing. Levi is just that… his self-worth is low and his sense of guilt (especially over leaving his grandmother) is high. I hurt for Levi…how alone he felt and his living conditions… but good gracious when he realized he was just a convenience to Hayden when he wanted something more-that hurt!
Now I also love a good grump. And Hayden was certainly that… a scowling hard-nosed chef and owner. Perhaps because I’m a huge fan of a show centered at a restaurant but the Yes, Chef’s do it for me.
So I really did enjoy this… liked both MCs, the restaurant setting, rags and riches rescue/love, and a very sweet HEA. Was this perfect? No. I thought the office hook-ups seemed out of character for Hayden given his staff right out the door. These guys were not discreet! I also found Hayden’s 180 from just using Levi to being all lovey dovey a bit too sudden.
Neither of those issues took away enjoyment though. I was also spellbound with how Levi was going to handle that last scene when his old life came calling. I wish he handled it differently but I totally get it. Epilogue was great.

Everyone deserves a second chance

Such a great story of a young man Levi who got caught up in the wrong crowd and ended up spending two years in prison. When he gets out on parole, he gets a job at his parole officers’s brothers restaurant. Hayden is a grumpy chef dedicated to his restaurant, he sleeps, breathes and lives it. So he isn’t happy when his brother forces him to take on an ex con he’s worried about.

The attraction is immediate but Hayden is his boss and knows he shouldn’t get involved. Things get heated pretty quickly but there are other things happening as well. Like Levi’s ex criminal boss sniffing around him, his grandmother is in a home and he’s still so young and jaded.

Hayden discovers a few things about Levi that has him changing the way he thinks and they start communicating more. But temptation is always there. When Levi gets put in a difficult situation will Hayden understand or kick him out.

I enjoyed the book, couldn’t put it down, the secondary characters were enjoyable also. This was about getting a second chance in life, learning to trust and let go of insecurities and letting love in. Hayden also had to learn to give up control on his restaurant and start enjoying life also. He was a very generous man and lover.

This was so much more than I was expecting. I loved the male leads in this story – both Hayden and Levi gave the impression of being completely closed off – from friendship, let alone falling in love. But the chemistry between the two of them was undeniable from the very beginning. Things got steamy very quickly and the almost ‘hate sex’ aspect of things was very, very well done.

But where this book worked so well for me was after the hate sex. Levi questioning the way things were between them and then becoming ill was a turning point I wasn’t expecting and definitely enjoyed. Seeing such a caring side to Hayden was a real pleasure and I loved how he looked after Levi.

The blast from the past was very well done, especially because it didn’t rely on David being attracted to Levi – he was very much the type of arrogant man who couldn’t accept that Levi wasn’t prepared to go back to the life he had had before, and dragging Levi back into things against his will was such a rotten (but plausible) thing to do. Hayden acquitted himself well – special mention to his brother – and the way things were wrapped up made me give a satisfied sigh. This reminded me very much of the Strays series by Garrett Leigh in a good way. Very much enjoyed and will look for more by this author.

cute

Very cute read, I thought it was going to be more angsty but it works well without it being an angst fest and was still enjoyable. Levi and Hayden were super cute, and I’m a sucker for nursing someone back to health. I do love a grump who is sweet on his man, though would’ve loved to see more of his grumpiness to others so we can really appreciate his sweetness to Levi. After everything he’s been through, Levi deserved Hayden and his happy ending.

I do wish there was more detail on working restaurant life, the opening was promising and it was giving a Gordon Ramsey vibe that I was excited for but then it just fizzled out. I’m also not saying 2 years in prison isn’t long or it’s easy, but they kind of made it seem like Levi was in there for longer, like maybe if he was in there from 19-23 then all the main/side characters’ reactions/actions would make more sense. The conflict was pretty predictable but also didn’t play out exactly the way I thought it would, and it lead to a nice resolution.

There were points throughout reading I’d say this was a 3.5 star or 4 star read, so I guess I could go in the middle and say overall 3.75 stars, but I still think it’s worthy of a 4 star rating.

Contemporary romance, boss/employee, set in London.

Levi Gutierrez (23) is released on parole after serving two years in prison. He was incarcerated at age 21 after getting caught stealing cars. He never knew his father and his mother abandoned him when he was two years old so he was raised by his grandmother. After Levi went to prison, his grandmother was placed in a nursing home.

Hayden Quinn (29) is a chef who runs his own restaurant. He devotes most of his time to his business, which leaves no room for a romantic relationship. He was adopted by his parents and has a brother, Darien, who is Levi's parole officer.

Darien convinces Hayden to employ Levi for a short term while he looks for another position for him. Once Levi starts working in the kitchen with Hayden, things heat up fairly quickly in the intimacy department. When Levi becomes unwell, Hayden takes care of him and they form an emotional attachment. Levi's criminal past comes back to haunt him and he must make a difficult choice to keep his loved ones safe.

This was my first book from the author and I really enjoyed the story as well as the author's writing style, which was quite engaging from start to end.
