I read the first book in the Athenaeum series out of friendship. This is definitely not my normal genre (trashy romance novels, if you please), but I waited for the second because it is actually a good series. “Doubling Down” kept me entertained and gave me more than one good chuckle. I enjoyed the action sequences because they were not over the top nor overly dramatic. It has the right blend of relatability, humor, military references, and flow to keep it from being too wordy and boring.

Doubling Down is a notable step up from Door Number Three. That's not to say that D#3 isn't good because it is, but there's a healthy amount of world building in it. This time out, the action is as intense and unhinged as the gang that staff Athenaeum, Inc. But, be warned, along with the action there unexpected moments of dark humor and reality that gives this book a degree of authenticity that humanizes the characters. As a rule, I try to keep spoilers out of my reviews, but I will say this...the blurb on the back barely scratches the surface of this rocket ride!

Interesting read
This book contains a very plausible view of the seedy underbelly of the international intelligence community. The names have been changed to protect the guilty, of course.
I actually have it on good authority that most intelligence battles are won "one meeting at a time", as a former SEAL team Intel chief once once told me. And no, you don't get to know who that was. This book seems to hold to that concept very well.

if you like first you will be happy
This has snark, lots of gun nerd ( and other nerd) references that make you smile and google stuff you end up going hmmmm at.
Warning it leaves you wanting the next book bad just like GRRM- GOT - at least no cliffhanger so enjoy.

Awesome second book!
This second book in the Athenaeum Inc series was just awesome. I loved how Prof's character has continued to develop and I can't wait until book 3 comes out to find out about the further adventures of my favorite band of Tennessee Mercenaries.

Comfy military thriller
If you like thrillers that include accounting, shopping trips, slutty women's fashion, military weapons trivia, and the occasional shooting of a bad guy here and there, this is the book for you. Good characters. Overly descriptive settings. 80s mens adventure book references and obscure alcohol references. What's not to love.

I seriously enjoy the style this Author used to tell this story. The characters and the storyline move at a pace that at times make you wonder what’s going to happen next. I’ve already got the next volume ready to read and looking forward to it. I highly recommend this series.
