In a world untouched by humans, salty water and government, beings called Celegons thrive. Or, they would, if their home was not overrun with monsters that target them as their main food source. Despite being intelligent and quick, it's often not enough to avoid their untimely ends to a monster's sharp jaws. However their willpower to live is strong and the race stays alive despite the dwindling numbers.
Though there are hundreds of Celegons all facing their own struggles in life, this particular story focuses on Lyla Skyli and her woes in life. She made her way through life by stealing from others, not caring about any needs aside from her own. Her life soon takes a dramatic change when she meets a familiar pair of sunset eyes during a heist.
Even in the brightest areas, an underlying darkness resides...
Lyla is such a fun character. She starts off a bit stubborn and angry, but as her journey moves forward, she grows and learns to accept certain things - like Marls' presence - and even grows to appreciate some of them. Her life as she saw it was thrown into chaos and even though she resisted whole heartedly at first, she learned to compromise.
Marls is something else. Spoiled, pampered, but so full of life and curiosity. He also experiences a lot of growth once he meets and runs away with Lyla. I found it both fun and heartwarming to watch Marls and Lyla change and become more well-rounded, engaging characters. The more time they spent together, the more they developed emotionally and, in Marls' case, physically.
While this world is full of fantastic creatures, what I was missing was the world building. It's never really explained what the Celegons were, why their world was the way it was, and what was threatening them. I'd have loved a bit more detail on the history of the world and more information on its cities and inhabitants.
However, that didn't stop me from enjoying the story. It's full of fast-paced action, funny banter, and unique characters. While it's a little slow to start, it gives you a chance to get to know Lyla and Marls a bit before the action begins. Which, for me, is a good thing, because once it gets going, it doesn't stop until you hit the cliffhanger of an ending. I'm excited to see where the next book takes Lyla and her friends.
*Thanks to the author for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I knew from the opening line that I would be in for a wild ride, with a fun narrator, and I wasn't disappointed. Lyla is an amazing FMC, and really changes and grows over the course of the book. The opening chapter is what really made me like Lyla, the way she reacts to her world going sideways felt relatable, even though I've never lived in her world, I felt connected to her. Marls is quite the interesting MMC, having lived a very different life than Lyla when their paths cross. He also changed quite a bit over the course of the story, but like Lyla, it's an organic and believable transformation. The story itself is engaging, and the plot moves along smoothly. The narration feels like listening to sitting around a campfire with old friends, catching up on what's happened in each other's lives since the last time you hung out. The world-building is amazing, and little facts about it are woven into the story, so that before you know it, you're completely immersed without any jarring info dumps. That ending left me wanting more adventures, however!
This book is a DNF at 32% for me. It was quite boring and I felt like there were little to none dynamics to the characters. This book is supposed to be somewhat of a adventure and mystery story, but it doesn't show through at all. I really missed the depth and could get into the story. In addition there was not a lot of worldbuilding, making this book not interesting at all to me. Maybe it is a good book for others, but it just isn't one I enjoyed reading
