A lonely experiment. A hardhearted con artist. A death that changes everything.
MINETTE is trapped on the New Realm station, but she dreams of exploring Earth. To escape, she’ll have to recover from her illness first, a mysterious affliction that haunts her sleep and alters her reality.
But there are things far worse than being trapped.
As she fights her own mind, she begins to question those around her. Are they really keeping her safe? Or are they keeping others safe from her?
ASAHI is painfully broke. Overworked and exhausted, she finally snaps and agrees to join Yuzuki, Hiro, and their band of misfit con artists.
Just like that, her new life begins.
Entrenched in a glittering world of elaborate plots to foil the corrupt, Asahi fits right in. Unfortunately, their next con has one fatal flaw—one that could ruin everything they’ve worked for.
Neuracode: Part II is the second half of the prequel to Project Juniper, a thrilling YA/NA cyberpunk series written by Eris Goode. If you like Amie Kaufman’s Illuminae, Marissa Meyer’s Cinder, or Marie Lu’s Legend, you’ll love this story about friendship, integrity, and flawed heroes.
Eris Goode is the author of Project Juniper, a YA/NA cyberpunk series that marks her first foray into the world of self-publishing. A twenty-three-year-old from Canada, she graduated in 2022 with a double degree in Geomatics and English Lit and Rhetoric, complete with a minor in computer science and a specialization in creative writing.
Other than obsessing over writing, Eris also enjoys obsessing over art. Recently, she’s wielded her sketchbook and pencil once more to draw some poor anatomy, cute frogs, and poisonous-looking mushrooms. When she’s not doing that, she’s re-watching shows and movies she’s seen a million times because she just can’t stick with something new. Her favorites include Bee and Puppycat, Arcane, Jennifer’s Body, Adventure Time, and Howl’s Moving Castle.
Eris wrote her first story when she was ten years old. It was about the souls of the dead, and it was extremely cringe, but it was also a stepping stone that led her to continue writing cringe. Then, at seventeen years old, she completed the first draft of Neurahack, which was (lazily) called Juniper at the time. Those 50K words were a total mess, and over the years, it was rewritten and edited countless times, along with the other books in the series. Now, she’s excited to share her published work with everyone!
Another glimpse of other characters within the Project Juniper universe. Split into two parts, the first is a diary log that captures the angst and frustration of Minette, the girl left behind to be a test subject. I loved how she was voiced so realistically over time, going from uneducated and alone to more articulate and free thinking. It gives an insight into who the mysterious child we met in book one really was. The second part follows unknown character Asahi as she falls on hard times, ends up in dubious company and... Well. You'll see how she might have connections to Juniper's world. While I still don't think the third person writing is as engaging (the set up is really fast; Asahi makes a weird decision considering she didn't even recognise a key player from her earlier life) but the story leaves you wanting to know more.
Neuracode part II portrays Minette, part of a scientific experiment, who struggles to control her thoughts and is ever changing. Yusuki and Hiro, continues their con artist schemes, but also drag Asahi into the mix. A major heist doesn't quite turn out as expected and Asahi finds herself in an inopportune dilemma. What is to become of them all? I received an ARC copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a story of two halves, Minette is a victim of phase three and desperately wants to return to Earth but her memory is either missing or at best confused. How can she ever escape? Asahi is broke after she gets fired from her job. Then her luck seems to change and she gets a job working with her old schoolmate Yuzuki and her life is transformed - too good to be true? Its a great book and highly recommended.
Death is not the worst-case scenario For me, this was a blend of neuroscience and mental illness with some bio ethics thrown in. The authors did a great job in describing Minette’s brain on the fritz…
Fave line: ‘I don’t want to be in the dark again’.
Gonna look up where to buy Jasmine ice cream before I start the next in series – “Neurahack”.
As with the other prologue to this series, there is a novella and a kind of verbal/neural record, the first with a new character not yet present in the main trilogy and the second with one who was a minor character in the first main book. It is quite curious to release prologues either side of the first book in a new series, but what the heck, why not, I suppose.
There isn't too much space for character development, but Minette (v/n record) presents as a more complex character, while Asahi (novella) has an interesting little adventure going on and we get to experience slightly more of what this Earth is all about and how similar in many ways it is to current times - corporate menace and taking advantage of people, sound familiar?
A nice little intro to two (presumably minor) characters, much as was Neuracode part I. Leaves you wanting more, which can only be a good thing.
This second prequel, young adult, science fiction novella, Neurocode Part II, continues to set the scene for the main books where more new faces are included…Hiro, Asahi and Yuzuki.
These characters lead action packed lives where planning and danger are ever waiting. It ends with unfinished business or closure and plenty of questions after there are consequences. This makes the reader want to read on into the next title!
Highly recommended for engaging the reader’s attention and well worth re-reading again too!
I received this as a free advanced reader copy from BookSirens and this is my own opinion, given voluntarily.
(First off read all the books in this easy read YA fantasy series, they are great.) Like Part 1, Neurocode Part 2 gives you insight into some of the characters in the Project Juniper series. I really like the style of these fillers. Must have taken the authors so much time and effort the matching the detail with the main books, and shows off their skill. I read part Neurocode parts 1 and 2 in between main series Project Juniper books 2 and 3; I think that’s a sensible place to fit them in. Thank you to Eris Goode, Kis Ruhler and BookSirens for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
Part Two of the prequel to the Project Juniper series is told in two very different parts. First is the story of Minette who longs to visit Earth but is trapped in a struggle with her own mind
Asahi joins a group of cyber con artists when she gets low on funds but the consequences could be dire
An excellent companion to the main series with some great characters and interesting plot lines
