It is 1898, the Spanish-American War is raging in the Caribbean, and the US Army is in the process of seizing Puerto Rico from the Spanish Empire. 24-year-old medical graduate Lieutenant Bailey Ashford has just been assigned to the invasion force's Medical Corps. Lieutenant Ashford quickly realizes
that an ugly and utterly mysterious force is hard at work against an idyllic backdrop of majestic mountains and breathtaking tropical beauty. A bizarre malady is mercilessly affecting an overwhelming majority of the native jibaro people and slowly robbing them of their lives.
Faced with an urgent, pervasive medical emergency, the charismatic and resourceful Ashford must draw upon all his cunning and medical knowledge to conquer the pandemic before it completely devastates the island. Based on true events, this is a tale of medical mystery, the tireless struggle to decipher the riddle, and the final restoration of an island nation to its lost destiny.
WOW! I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It is truly a master piece and I hope it grows to receive the recognition it deserves. And it’s a debut! This touched my heart in so many ways. As someone who usually enjoys fiction, I was skeptical about this non-fiction selection. The writer has a very beautiful, lyrical style and I found myself sighing at many of his sentences, chuckling at the bits of humor and enjoying the pleasantly easy flowing voice in which he delivers the seriousness of the situation. I could feel everything, the emotions strongly painted for us. There were times where I could not put the book down. I expected a book about a medical discovery to be mundane but this was so fascinating to read and I felt as if I was figuring out the mystery alongside the characters. I felt immersed and invested deeply and Saúl manages to make you root for each of our main characters, highlighting their defining traits and intricately woven lives.
I definitely feel the author’s plight to give Ashford, our American hero, more recognition. I will be sure to tell everyone about this wonderful book. I can’t imagine the hours of research it took to compile all the events of this story and to get the details exactly right. Bravo, it was so surprising how good it was.
As a person of faith, I felt the balance between critiquing religious instituons while also showing genuine people of faith contributing toward progress, was done exceedingly well. I felt there was enough positive representation in this story that the negatives didn’t feel as overbearing. It wasn’t a “ah mean weird religious people,” but instead it underlines those who used their beliefs for evil and those who applied them towards good. This feels like it could be appreciated by non-believers and believers alike. It felt reasonably and respectably fair. I appreciated the carefully chosen Bible verses dispersed throughout, giving Ashford’s faith a beautiful way to shine all the way through. I have to admit I felt so happy and excited to see my faith portrayed the way it should be. It was accurately represented for the depth and beauty that it brings, and shows how God can change the horrible into the extraordinary. Love, love, love. I couldn’t praise this aspect any higher.
It certainly earned a solid 5 stars from me. Great work Mr. Saúl. It was a pleasure to read your book, I feel honored to have found it.
