This is from 1971, but there are instructions and diagrams for 312 embroidery stitches not to mention chapters on all everything to do with embroidery. It may not have glossy pictures and attention grabbing headers, but if you are looking for actual, usable directions, it can't be beat.

Phenomenal resource for the breadth of stitches used in crewel work. Contains concise instructions and illustrations to explain step by step instructions.
