From haunted mine shafts to inexplicable lights in the northern sky, there are strange things afoot in the peaceful northern municipality of Sudbury; eerie phenomenon that will amaze, give you pause, make you wonder, and have you looking twice at what might first appear to be innocent shadows.
Mark is a writer, editor and bookseller who was born and grew up in Sudbury, spent many years in Ottawa and Hamilton and currently lives in Waterloo, Ontario.
When he is not writing, he tacks "Lefebvre" back onto his name and works as a book industry consultant, having been a bookseller since the 1992, the same year his first short story was published.
Apart from publishing novels and non-fiction paranormal explorations under the name Mark Leslie, having works occasionally appearing on his mother's refrigerator door under the name Mark Lefebvre, and podcasting and consulting about the book industry under the name Mark Leslie Lefebvre for his Stark Publishing/Stark Reflections brand, Mark is a lover of craft beer.
When he's not enjoying craft beer or playing around with his three given names, he can usually be found wandering, awestruck through bookstores or libraries.
Yes, I'm one of the co-authors for this book, so I'm a bit biased towards really liking it. Having gone through multiple edits with our amazing editor, Matt, I think that Jenny and I have created a compelling and intriguing read that celebrates both Sudbury and many of the strange tales the city has to share.
Okay, so here is a little background story as to why I absolutely love this book. My father was always that awesome father that always made sure I had any book I wanted, no matter what. I do feel bad for that now, but he always told me that he loved that I was the only child in the whole family that read so much/or at all. My Dad always believed in knowledge. Last year Mark Leslie was selling personalized signed copies of this book at Costco in Sudbury. I was so excited for this when I found out. A couple of days before the signing, my dad was diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer. On the day of the signing I didn't even want to leave my father's side. He was (and still is) my favorite person ever. Through all the pain and drugs, my father looked at me and said "You can not miss this, you have been excited for this for a while and I don't want to die knowing that you lost your chance at meeting the author and getting a signed copy". So I went to Costco and met Mark, I told him what was going on (since apparently I like to talk a lot). He signed a copy for my mother and I, as well as gave me a Spooky Sudbury pen (which I still use) as well as an Iphone 4S case (which I also still use). He is just an amazing person, so naturally I had to start reading it right away.
Now my dad isn't interested in the paranormal (he was a western type man), but he got me to read it to him, my mom, my brother and my sister-in-law (since I love hearing myself talk). It was amazing because we were all able to discuss these places and even took my sister-in-law to some of them (since she is from new mexico and that is where her and my brother live). Then we were able to discuss some of the other places that I have found in Sudbury that are pretty creepy and discussed actually sending an email to Mark about them for another book maybe. But I am definitely no writer, so all of my thoughts are everywhere and scribbled on paper lol
We all found this book extremely interesting and the writing is amazing. I love that Mark Leslie is from Sudbury and is able to contribute some of his stories, which makes me feel closer to him.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the paranormal, or just even knows where Sudbury is lol. It is a great book. Mark Leslie and Jenny Jelen, as well as everyone else who contributed to this book clearly put in a lot of hard work and it was worth it.
I am especially fond of this book because it is part of the last memories I have with my father and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I will definitely be picking up more books by Mark Leslie :)
Let me start off by saying that I love almost all things paranormal. Heck one of my most favourite movies of all time is "The Exorcist".
Both myself and my room-mate are on Goodreads Give-away. I told him it might be a good way for him to find new authors to read. So the one day we were both on there looking at books. He is somewhat particular of his genres where I enjoy many different reads, so he was further ahead, then I was. No big deal right? LOL
Then I came upon the title Spooky Sudbury. It piqued my interest on 2 levels. One, it was about the paranormal and two, it was Sudbury, where my parents grew up, my fathers family had a furniture store for many years in Chelmsford called Mainville Furniture, and where I spent a month a year till I was 13. So of course I went to enter the book give-away only to find out that my room-mate had already entered and it was 1 entry per household. He won it thank goodness LOL.
It was delivered to our door and I was first to pick it up since he was in the middle of a previous novel.
I loved Spooky Sudbury!
Each story setting was somewhere I have been. It also unburied some old memories I haven't remembered in decades. For that I will always fondly adore this book.
The stories within were very believable and easy to read. I don't often read short stories but I found this to be easy to read. The characters and descriptions were vivid and I felt myself pulled into each story.
I don't often read much about UFOs so that section was a bit boring for me but that is just cause I don't usually read things of that genre.
I found that it made me think if the nickel deposits in the area are a call for spirits and UFOs.
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy paranormal, and especially to those with a connection to the area.
I will be making a point of checking out other books by Mark Leslie.
First off, I have to say that I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
I was excited to receive this as I am living in Ontario and have a cottage in Northern Ontario fairly close to Sudbury. I thought it would be perfect to bring to the cottage for some spooky campfire reading. My family and I enjoyed the book. The stories had enough of a creepy factor to satisfy us, yet were tame enough not to scare the life out of us.
After reading a bit more on the author Mark Leslie, I was happy to learn that he also wrote a Haunted Hamilton book which I will be looking for as I live just outside of Hamilton.
Spooky Sudbury ambitiously runs the gamut from ghost stories to UFO’s to Bigfoot and nearly every other kind of paranormal activity that can make the skin crawl on the back of your neck. Leslie and Jelen have taken the stories of numerous contributors and retold them with the familiar style of a good old gabfest around the campfire (on a summer night when the moon is full, of course). Others may appreciate the stories, but the people of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada owe it to themselves to read this.
An interesting book about Sudbury and the hold it has on those that have lived there. A good book for those visiting the area as at the end it has a lot of tourist type information. I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
Finished Reading this a few days ago. Forgot to update this
But I give the book a 2 out of 5 stars. I found it really hard to get in to. And i like spooky and creepy things. But it was neat finding out things about Sudbury i never knew!
