Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall (born Marmaduke William Pickthall, 7 April 1875 – 19 May 1936) was a Western Islamic scholar noted for his English translation of the Qur'an. A convert from Christianity, Pickthall was a novelist, esteemed by D. H. Lawrence, H. G. Wells, and E. M. Forster, as well as a journalist, headmaster, and political and religious leader. He declared his conversion to Islam in dramatic fashion after delivering a talk on ‘Islam and Progress' on 29 November 1917, to the Muslim Literary Society in Notting Hill, West London. He was also involved with the services of the Woking Muslim Mission in the absence of Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din, its founder.

***Fulfilling my life by breathing The Surrender***

After completing my first ever read through of the English translation of The Quran I can wholeheartedly say that I wasn't ready for how much this was going to feel like home. It is clear that this text will never be able to be fully translated or understood in its entirety but this is balanced with the fact that the advice given is easily followed. However, the key thing I have learnt is how little this scripture is actually practiced by people who follow Al-Islam. The Muslim world, as I have experienced it, is littered with people who focus on worldly gains, cultural superiority and linguistic conceit - all of which are nothing to do with this god given literature. There is beautiful and poetic explanations of how a good spouse is akin to a garment, that honey can heal mankind and how ascribing partners to Allah is like how spiders feel safe in their homes even though they can be easily swept away. I am so excited to live my life according to my interpretation of the words written in this book. Even if you are of those who do not believe, literature can still speak to you, regardless of who you believe has written it. Can't a painting still be breathtaking even though you don't know who painted it? I am touched, honoured and at peace after completing this and I'm sure I will revisit it many times in my life. May you all stay happy and blessed as well. Alhamdulillah.
