The roots of New Thought can be traced back to the early 1800 s,and like any spiritual movement, the interpretation and application ofbasic principles tend to evolve with society in a changing world. From our vantage point in the 21st century, we can see that despitethe diverse path New Thought has taken, its core beliefs continue tobe a source of comfort for individuals seeking spiritual strength andencouragement. What are these basic principles and why do they provide a longlastingspiritual foundation? In THE PRINCIPLES OF NEW THOUGHT,author April Moncrieff has answered this question and clarified theunique aspects of New Thought by explaining the Biblical andindividual influences that sparked this spiritual way of life. Notstopping there, this intriguing book will make one realize that thephilosophy actually dovetails more closely with Biblical teachingsthan many of today s traditional Christian groups.Ernest Holmes was quoted as saying, The Principles governing theNew Thought movement are universal but individually andindependently applied. In other words, even though the one TrueSource behind New Thought has forever been available, the spirituallaws are useless without the acknowledgement and action of eachand every soul. Here s a new book that takes New Thought followersto the original roots of this world-wide movement, so they canunderstand and build a stronger spiritual life of their own.
APRIL F. MONCRIEFF is an author, teacher, counselor and lifelong student of metaphysical spirituality. An ordained New Thought minister, she has a diploma in Advanced Studies from Unity School of Christianity’s Continuing Education Program and holds Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Religious Studies from Emerson Theological Institute. She has taught classes, conducted meditation groups, lectured for many years on a variety of metaphysical subjects, published poetry in Unity magazine, and writes children’s fiction with spiritual themes. Rev. Moncrieff is a graduate of Connecticut College with a B.A. in English. She enjoys reading, music, word games, travel, antiques, vegetarian cooking and yoga.
I found this book such a brilliant and clear elucidation of the Principles that distinguish New Thought ideas from traditional Christianity that it belongs in the collection of anyone who's interested in a metaphysical interpretation of the teachings of Jesus. I'd especially like to invite anyone who is in the process of joining a Unity Church or Center for Spiritual Living (or has recently joined) to read it.
Its author, Rev. Dr. April Moncrieff, really knows her stuff. Her work is grounded in lifelong study of New Thought writers, and the Bible. In very well organized chapters, she contrasts conventional and New Thought understandings of the Holy Trinity, Heaven, the Divinity of Christ, what it means to be "born again," Salvation, Holy Communion, Prayer, Atonement, and Resurrection.
I think it is important for new members of New Thought congregations to be aware that their centers stand for something. They are not simply Not Conventional Christianity. To welcome and accept diversity is not the same as having no identity or defining principles. For those who come to NT spiritual communities already predisposed to Christianity, this book will deepen your appreciation for your background and heritage. For those who come because of a personal response to religious abuse, or as observers of the horrific way the teachings of Christ have been used to disempower, subjugate, marginalize, and control, this book may be a pathway to healing, reintegration, and forgiveness. I highly recommend it.
I really loved this book, sort of an intro for me into New Thought. I sort of got into this because of the spiritual awakening/path that I'm on and from wondering what ideology much of the content on Gaia.com was based on. So I did a bit of research. I also came across somehow, The Science of Getting Rich, which also led me here.
