PATTERNS is a simple board book that introduces the concept of matching for babies. The book includes an illustration from around nature along with something man-made and three words about it on each page spread.
What I loved: This board book will work well for infants who love to explore visually. The book includes bright colors that highlight the patterns from nature and things that are man-made (for instance, a thorny branch and a cheese grater). There are a few words on each page that somewhat describe the elements of what they are seeing.
What left me wanting more: I am not sure the patterns were clear on every page, and although they are colorful, the takeaway was likewise not obvious enough for little learners. That being said, children can still enjoy looking even without any lessons.
Final verdict: PATTERNS is a colorful board book for infants that will work best for children who love exploring bright visual images. This would work best as a fun book to look through rather than a learning tool for patterns.
Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.
This one is a 2.5 for me. Learning to distinguish certain shapes and patterns is an important life skill for youngsters. This board book, which focuses on patterns such as spikes or a curly shell that are found in nature, also contains images of structures that utilize those same patterns. With guidance from an adult, even babies can notice and distinguish the curves, repeated elements, and symmetry that is around them, even though they won't recognize those particular terms until much later. Still, the concepts will have been planted in their subconscious.
A fun board book for very young children shows the relationship between patterns in nature compared to patterns on man-made things such as buildings, a bridge and an umbrella.
The brightly colored illustrations help to focus attention on the patterns which can lead to pointing out similarities and differences.
