Brent Peterson is a professor and pastor and has been serving full time in ministry for more than ten years now. His passion for worship and for the church led him to pursue a doctoral degree in Liturgical Studies. He has written articles for the Wesleyan Theological Journal, was the co-editor of the book Post-modern and Wesleyan, and currently lives in Nampa, Idaho.
I read this book for my Christian Corporate Worship class under Dr. Steve Johnson. Overall, this was an exceptionally helpful book in bringing Christian leaders and lay folk to consider how to shape our corporate worship in a theologically sound and resolutely Christian way. Peterson writes from a very strong Wesleyan viewpoint. Giving very simplified historical background on the various issues, Peterson makes the content accessible to any reader. Additionally, he stands unafraid to point out where Protestants (particularly Evangelicals, of whom he is a member) have erred in our zeal and how often simple (AND historically and theologically informed) changes can put us back on a path of fruitful worship that leads us to become "more fully human" (the phrase he returns to throughout the book). I especially appreciated his return to having a proper place for and perspective on the sacraments of baptism and communion (Eucharist). His practical suggestions for corporate worship gatherings are VERY helpful and clearly come from a seasoned worship leader who had his theological sense about him.
A really good, informative, and, what's more important - thought-provoking book on worship. Why do we worship, why is it important to worship, how we should worship...
Good book, especially for those who are on the worship team.
