Orks are brutal and violent aliens who love nothing more than to fight. They are tough, with hulking physiques, thick skulls, and toothy maws. When gathered in an excitable crush of noise and death, Orks become infused with a strange energy that drives them to even greater acts of unrestrained ferocity. They gleefully pile into the fight, bellowing their deafening war cry – ‘Waaagh!’.

This 152-page book contains a trove of background information covering prominent Ork conflicts from the past and present, accompanied by spectacular artwork and galleries of painted miniatures. Codex: Orks grants you a detailed look into the organisation of Ork armies, be they small planetary raiding forces or monstrous Waaagh!s, as well as the troops, leaders, and war machines that fight among them. The book also contains the rules for leading a brutally effective Orks army in Combat Patrol, Crusade, and Matched Play games of Warhammer 40,000.

Inside this hardback codex, you'll find:
– Thrilling tales of legendary Ork escapades, from war on a galactic scale to smaller, more 'covert' operations
– All of the army rules you need to play games of Warhammer 40,000 with your Ork miniatures
– Lore on the Ork kulturs and how they structure their armies
– Detailed matched play rules, including dedicated secondary objectives
– A full suite of rules for playing narrative Crusade campaigns and intense Combat Patrol games

Codex: Orks is a typical Codex for the tenth edition of Warhammer 40,000, including the lore and rules for the belligerent greenskins.

A lot of the lore in the background section has been taken from previous editions, but some of it has been rewritten, updated and added to a reasonable amount in some places. The background section includes three short narrative pieces and while the first is really just an way to introduce the various units and clans, the other two are quite entertaining, especially the one about a Big Mek trying to bring down a Chaos Knight.

The Showcase section of the book is reasonable, and the artwork is as good as it always is.

The rules section of the book contains all the usual tenth edition rules. The Combat Patrol section features the rules for the Beast Snagga’s Combat Patrol that seem reasonable, it is just a shame that the Beast Snaggas are probably my least favourite part of the Ork faction. The Detachments in the book are all reasonably good with basic hordes, Beast Snaggas, the Kult of Speed, green tide hordes, and Nob heavy hordes all catered for. The lack of a dakka horde detachment is a little disappointing, however, as that is my preferred style of Ork army. The Crusade rules that allow a player to build a Waaagh! seem to be a lot better than those from last edition that allowed players to collect scrap and has Warbosses to fighting for control of a Waaagh! The datasheets for the various Ork units are all standard for this edition.

Great codex, but would have liked to see more maps and read more stories about the current Ork conquests though. Seemed to skim the surface of a lot of the lore, but a great read nonetheless considering it’s mostly focussed on the tabletop game aspect. Great use of art throughout the book, although a lot reused from previous editions and artworks.

WAAAGH!

This is my first Warhammer 40k codex or book, since I am new. I loved how almost half of the book was lore, and that it included a large section of potential Ork color schemes. Also, unlike D&D, there’s a code in the back of the book that lets me use it digitally, which instantly makes it 5 stars no matter what imo
