Francesca Simon grew up in California and attended both Yale and Oxford Universities, where she specialised in Medieval Studies. How this prepared her to write children’s books she cannot imagine, but it did give her a thorough grounding in alliteration.

She then threw away a lucrative career as a medievalist and worked as a freelance journalist, writing for the Sunday Times, Guardian, Mail on Sunday, Telegraph, and Vogue (US). After her son Joshua was born in 1989, she started writing children’s books full time. One of the UK’s best-selling children’s writers, Francesca has published over 50 books, including the immensely popular HORRID HENRY series, which has now sold over twelve million copies.

Francesca won the Children’s Book of the Year in 2008 at the British Book Awards for Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman. HORRID HENRY is published in 24 countries and is also an animated CITV series. She lives in London with her husband, son, and Tibetan Spaniel, Shanti.

My dad gave me this book at Christmas with the inscription, "No one who has anything to do with children's books should be unfamiliar with Horrid Henry. He is a delight to read aloud and all kids no matter how old love him." Certainly he speaks the truth. Horrid Henry is not condescending, saccharine or moralising, which makes it entertaining for children of any age, even if their reading level is far in advance of Henry. It is my firm belief that if a book is not good enough for you to read then you should not give it to your children. Horrid Henry was a delight to me at age 23, and I would not hesitate to give them to my future kids.

3 and a half stars. I am reading the shortest books I started but never got to finish because of other books I started reading and this one was worth the ride. Most of the books are meant for children but they are still enjoyable and remind me of when I used to watch Horrid Henry on YouTube with my younger brother and on television at the nurse's hospital. This one included Henry pranking his annoying younger brother Peter into thinking he made it to the future, a football match which resulted in the teacher winning and Henry's plans to sabotage Father Christmas so as to steal all the gifts he hadn't received the previous year. Henry is greedy and vengeful however he isn't acknowledged much by his parents which is probably the reason as to why this bad and horrid behaviour ensued in the first place. Look forward to reading more. Thoughts that it is the British version of diary of a wimpy kid came to mind and I think I prefer Henry over Greg because of the fact that it is set in Britain and not America. Every book contains 4 stories and there are 3 entire books in this one. I especially enjoyed the Christmas related one and the Nativity play cracked me up when Henry insisted that Mary and Joseph enter his inn and watch television instead of go the the barn where Jesus was in fact, ultimately born hahaha.

My last Horrid Henry, ‘He was a zombie biting the head off the hapless human’, ‘He was a vampire sampling his supper’, I do like a vampire 😂 I love his antics at Restaurant Le Posh, Henry doing the Hand of God when playing football, and him causing a riot when going clothes shopping reminds me of how much I used to hate going clothes shopping lol - Funny to have Rich Aunt Ruby, Stuck Up Steve and Bossy Bill back, along with Prissy Polly, Pimply Paul and Vomiting Vera, and love the Christmas stories too, especially the nativity, I think I played a sheep 😂 So yeah, brings back a lot of fun memories!
